Pharmacist (Director of Pharmacy)

Northern Cochise Community Hospital – Willcox, Arizona

Northern Cochise Community Hospital (NCCH) is a 24-bed Critical Access Hospital serving Willcox and the surrounding rural communities in southeastern Arizona. We are dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality healthcare close to home.

We are currently seeking a Pharmacist (Director of Pharmacy) to oversee all aspects of our hospital pharmacy operations and provide consultation for our Rural Health Clinic. This is a working director position in a one-pharmacist facility, ideal for a self-motivated professional who thrives in a hands-on leadership role.

Position Summary

The Pharmacist (Director of Pharmacy) is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all pharmacy operations and personnel. This role ensures safe and effective medication use throughout the hospital, maintains compliance with regulatory standards, and serves as a clinical resource for medical and nursing staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement departmental goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.

  • Establish and annually review the hospital’s pharmacy formulary.

  • Manage the dispensing and oversight of all pharmaceuticals, including after-hours and controlled substances.

  • Oversee emergency medication supplies and conduct inspections of crash carts.

  • Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and accreditation regulations, including participation in surveys and audits.

  • Direct and maintain the hospital’s 340B Drug Pricing Program in accordance with federal regulations.

  • Lead the Antibiotic Stewardship Program and other medication safety initiatives.

  • Participate in Quality Improvement and Medication Error Prevention programs.

  • Serve as liaison between the Pharmacy, Nursing, and Medical Staff regarding prescriptions, medication orders, and adverse reactions.

  • Manage departmental budgets, purchasing, and vendor relationships.

  • Prepare and maintain departmental reports, performance data, and statistical records.

  • Lead and participate in the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and required Medical Staff meetings.

Secondary Duties
  • Provide patient and family education on medication use and dosing.

  • Supervise inventory control and ensure adequate stock to meet patient needs.

  • Evaluate vendor performance and inspect received pharmaceutical products.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate pharmacy staff as applicable.

  • Conduct staff meetings, annual performance evaluations, and continuing education sessions.

  • Develop and monitor departmental budgets, including inventory, labor, and operating expenses.

  • Maintain departmental compliance with all licensure and certification standards.

  • Oversee quality assurance, patient and staff safety, and performance improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy (Pharm.

    D. or equivalent).

  • 1–2 years of hospital pharmacy experience preferred; rural or critical access hospital experience a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Advanced understanding of hospital-based pharmacy operations and regulatory requirements.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

  • Commitment to professional development and continuous quality improvement.

Licensure:

  • Current, unrestricted Pharmacist License issued by the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy (required).
