Job Summary: Direct comprehensive school counseling as defined by the Arizona Model for Counseling.
Key ResponsibilitiesUtilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school counselors promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students.
Major Function:Development and Management of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program
- Discuss the comprehensive school counseling program with the school administrator.
- Develop and maintain a written plan for effective delivery of the program based on the ASCA National Model and current individual school data.
- Communicate the goals of the program to stakeholders (administrators, teachers, students, parents, community/business leaders).
- Maintain current and appropriate resources for stakeholders.
- Use time primarily for direct services through the Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student Planning and Preventive and Responsive Services, and manage program administration, system support, and accountability (80% of time in services, 20% in management).
- Use data to develop comprehensive programs that meet student needs.
Delivery of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program Guidance Curriculum
- Provide leadership and collaborate to integrate the State Guidance Curriculum Standard Course of Study.
- Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
- Incorporate life skills that students need to be successful in the twenty‑first century.
- Assist all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career, and personal/social skills, goals, and plans (Education & Career Action Plan – ECAP).
- Accurately interpret and utilize student data.
- Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
- Provide individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
- Consult and collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and community resources regarding students with concerns.
- Implement an effective referral and follow‑up process as needed.
- Use assessment procedures to determine and structure counseling services.
- Provide information to school personnel regarding the counseling program.
- Assist teachers, parents/guardians, and stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
- Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
- Use available technology resources to enhance the program.
- Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the ASCA.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Educational Services.
Minimum Education and/or Experience- Arizona Guidance Counselor Certification for Prekindergarten‑12th Grade.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and establish effective relationships with district staff and site team members.
- Proficiency in computer software, including Microsoft Office applications.
Education and/or Experience
- Two years of school‑based counseling experience.
- Previous teaching experience.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
