Position Highlights
- The Extension Professional II for Commercial Horticulture supports the planning, delivery, and evaluation of educational programs and technical assistance related to commercial fruit, nut, vine, and vegetable production, as well as small-scale and specialty crop systems in Cochise County. This position works collaboratively with Extension faculty, county and state program teams, growers, and community partners to implement outreach initiatives, support applied field demonstrations, and coordinate program logistics.

The position provides leadership to volunteers and staff, assists with data collection and reporting, and ensures program compliance with University and sponsor requirements. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Program Coordination and Delivery:
    Plan, organize, and implement educational programs, workshops, demonstrations, and field days focused on commercial horticulture and small-scale crop production.
  • Collaborate with Extension specialists, faculty, and local stakeholders to deliver practical, research-based information to clientele.
  • Coordinate event logistics, materials, and publicity for Extension programs and activities.
  • Technical Assistance and Outreach:
    Provide research-based information and guidance to producers, homeowners, and community members on best practices in crop production, pest management, water conservation, and soil health.
  • Respond to inquiries, conduct site visits, and assist with applied demonstration projects and data collection.
  • Maintain records of outreach activities and participant engagement.
  • Program Evaluation and Reporting:
    Collect, track, and report program participation data, outcomes, and impacts.
  • Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and communication materials summarizing program results for internal and external audiences.
  • Contribute to grant and project reporting as assigned.

    Collaboration:

    Maintain professional competence through participation in relevant trainings, conferences, and professional associations.
  • Work collaboratively as part of the county and statewide Extension team to identify emerging issues and share resources.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of desert-adapted horticulture, crop management, and sustainable production systems. Skill in organizing and coordinating outreach and educational activities. Ability to communicate effectively with various groups, including producers, community members, and agency partners. Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, educational materials, and correspondence for diverse audiences. Ability to maintain high professional and ethical standards representing the University of Arizona.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based data management tools. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required. Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in horticulture, plant sciences, or related agricultural discipline. Experience in Cooperative Extension or community-based education programs. Previous experience working with commercial and specialty crop production practices relevant to arid and semi-arid regions.
