About the Role:
The Student Support Specialist I plays a critical role in fostering a positive and productive educational environment by providing comprehensive support to students throughout their academic journey. This position focuses on addressing student needs, facilitating access to resources, and promoting student success and well-being. The specialist collaborates closely with faculty, staff, and external partners to identify barriers to student achievement and develop effective interventions.
By maintaining detailed records and monitoring student progress, the role ensures timely and appropriate support services are delivered. Ultimately, the Student Support Specialist I contributes to creating an inclusive and supportive campus culture that empowers students to reach their full potential.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in education, business, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Two to three years for experience in higher education, office support, or clerical work.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Proficiency in using standard office software and student information systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
- Experience working with diverse student populations, including first-generation and underrepresented students.
- Knowledge of academic advising principles and student development theories.
- Familiarity with crisis intervention and conflict resolution techniques.
- A deep understanding of the history and contemporary issues facing Native people
- Bilingual abilities (O'odham or Spanish) or experience working in multicultural settings.
Responsibilities:
- Be the first point of contact, directing incoming and returning students toward the services they need to thrive.
- Help students plan their futures by assisting with class registration and schedule planning tailored to their goals.
- Facilitate the credit transfer process, ensuring students get the credit they deserve for their hard work.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop and implement strategies that enhance student retention and success.
- Respond promptly to student inquiries and concerns, ensuring a respectful and empathetic approach.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement of student support programs.
Skills:
The required and preferred skills are essential for effectively supporting students in a dynamic educational environment. Strong communication skills enable the specialist to build trust and rapport with students, faculty, and staff, facilitating clear and empathetic interactions. Organizational skills are used daily to manage caseloads, document student progress, and coordinate support services efficiently. Problem-solving and critical thinking skills help in identifying student needs and developing tailored interventions that promote academic and personal success.
Additionally, cultural competency and adaptability are vital for addressing the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the student population, ensuring inclusive and equitable support.
