Purpose

Performs a variety of semi‑skilled to skilled work to maintain water wells, chemical feeder equipment, pumps, motors, telemetry sensory equipment, treated water storage facilities, water distribution pipelines and related appurtenances, sanitary sewers for wastewater collection, pumping equipment for water and wastewater, and water and wastewater treatment plant equipment and operations. Performs moderate to difficult technical and mechanical work in the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment and conveyance facilities.

May provide direction to peers and subordinates in routine day‑to‑day activities but does not have supervisory responsibility. Conducts and administers all company work related efforts and activities within the rules, regulations, and responsibilities of the most current company safety policy and OHSA regulation. The Operator will respond to operational emergencies as deemed necessary by his/her supervisor, assist customers with concerns of water quality, delivery, odors, vector control and treatment, provide technical and/or physical assistance to other operations personnel, contractors and developers, and perform other duties as assigned.

The position may include on‑call work and shift work that may include nights and weekends.

Accountabilities
  • Demonstrate a continuous effort to improve operations by streamlining work processes, decreasing turnaround times, and working cooperatively to provide efficiency and cost effectiveness in the use of utility resources.
  • Deliver outstanding customer service, establishing and maintaining open communication with internal and external customers, including co‑workers, contractors, residents, and other utility departments.
  • Adhere to industry and utility safety standards, policies, practices, and procedures; provide services in accordance with all applicable regulatory requirements; prepare and submit required records and reports.
  • Execute routine and emergency operational, maintenance, construction, and repair functions of infrastructure or equipment in the wastewater collection division.
  • Conduct daily inspections of wastewater collection infrastructure, lift stations, aquifer recharge facilities and related equipment; record equipment and process readings; adjust system flow and stability; maintain records and reports.
  • Maintain wastewater lift stations, collect and interpret operational readings to maximize efficiency, and make operational control adjustments to protect public health and ensure system stability.
  • Obtain samples and perform fats, oils and grease sanitary sewer inspections to determine compliance with company standards; maintain industrial pre‑treatment as required by regulations and company standards.
  • Identify and mark utility locations by reading building plans and archives, pinpointing shutdown areas due to main breaks, measuring field points, digging covered utility boxes, tracing lines to find utility trenches, and painting or placing chasers, flags or stakes on utility locations.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Specialized knowledge of wells, pumps, motors, chlorine generators; knowledge of plumbing principles and ability to complete repairs to system or make repair decisions.
  • High degree of knowledge of plumbing materials and methods related to utility improvements; appropriate certifications required.
  • Arizona locations require an ADEQ Grade I Operator License in a specific concentration (Wastewater Treatment, Water Distribution, Collections, or Water Treatment). Maintain a valid state driver’s license; a CDL may be required.
