The Police Sergeant supervises the day-to-day activities of Police Officers and/or Detectives within an assigned district on an assigned shift or performs responsible staff functions at headquarters; manages schedules and approves leave request and time sheets; maintains statistical data in reference to crime rates; and participates in the more difficult police and investigative issues and instructs subordinates in the methods to be followed.
Assumes responsibility for assigned special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities; coordinates activities with other agencies; and performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and general orders received from a Police Lieutenant, Police Commander, or Chief of Police and is reviewed through observation of results and evaluation of reports submitted.
- Plans, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of sworn law enforcement staff involved in traffic and field patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities; supervise non-sworn staff in dispatch, records, and property and evidence room as assigned. Conduct personnel and equipment inspections.
- Serve as first level supervisor for an assigned shift; prepare and manage briefings; assign patrol beats. Conducts or provides for training; prepare, process and maintain a variety of written reports and personnel records.
- Train and evaluate assigned personnel; assist with training and orientation of new employees; provide training, guidance and counseling to assigned personnel; complete employee performance evaluations and reviews as required and promote career development of subordinates.
- Conducts administrative investigations and investigations of citizen complaints as necessary.
- Responds to major crimes, accident scenes and emergencies; assumes initial command; establish incident command post and implement the Incident Command System; may act as incident commander until such time as a higher-ranking person assumes command.
- Supervise specialized teams and services including Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT), Field Training Officers, Ranger Unit, Canine Unit, and related assignments. May also be assigned to supervise other specialty units.
- Participates in the enforcement of Federal, State and Tribal law and ordinances. Coordinate police activities with other units in the department, and/or other community departments or divisions.
- Conduct continuing review of assigned activities to identify problems and develop recommendations for improving services. Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; establishes schedules and methods for providing effective services and support in assigned area of responsibility; implements policies and procedures.
