Job Description

Position Title

Health Technician—District-wide

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. minimum with medical training and experience.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant required.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Clerical abilities and computer experience required.
  • Valid Arizona State Driver’s License.
  • Valid Arizona State Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills required.
  • Bilingual in Navajo and English required.
  • Capable of performing all responsibilities pertaining to the job description independently with high degree of competence and professionalism.

Job Goals

The Health Technician will provide the fullest educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being and will deliver supportive and complimentary health related activities.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Provides minor first aid to sick and injured students and administers emergency procedures according to district policy.
  • Exercises good judgment by contacting 911, the emergency team on site, the building principal and the district health specialist, in case of major illness or injury.
  • Contacts parents and/or guardian of ill or injured student in accordance with established school health policy and, if necessary, arranges for the student to go home.
  • Confers with the district health specialist regarding absence of students for health reasons (communicable disease, injury, hospitalization, etc.).
  • Communicates with teachers and other school personnel regarding students seen in the health care office.
  • Reports safety hazards to building principal and district health coordinator and school health technicians or other designated school personnel.
  • Assists with preventable health services (e.g., fluoride mouth rinse and immunization) according to the policy of the District and Indian Health Service.
  • Performs technical (i.e., special health care) procedures with proper training according to District Policy.
  • Dispenses medication according to District policy and all applicable State, Federal and Navajo Nation Laws, rules and regulations.
  • Participates on School and District Safety Committee, Emergency Response Teams and Crisis Management Teams for the District.
  • Maintains consistent health records of all new student and continuing students according to District Health Office procedures as well as the health center office.
  • Tallies, maintains, copies, and distributes monthly and yearly reports that contain information on treatment, procedures and student visit count.
  • Performs initial screening on students as designated by the district health specialist and refers to appropriated specialist for further evaluation.
  • Assists in the distribution, collection and review of health information forms and refers all students with special needs to the district health specialist.
  • Assists in communicable disease prevention by appraising immunization needs of students; notifies the district health specialist of those in need of immunization.
  • Observes students for other health needs and makes referrals.
  • Documents visitation by students to the health office according to District Health Service policy and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Terms of Employment

Ninety (90) days probationary period of employment when initially hired. Nine and one-half (9.5) months 190 days a year thereafter at Grade 5 on the Initial Placement Support Staff Salary Schedule. This position is non-exempt. The Governing Board will establish the salary and work year.
