Under general supervision of the Fire Captain, provides direct services, individually as a member of a team in response to fire, rescue, hazmat, and other calls for service. Additionally, the Firefighter/EMT will respond to medical emergencies and provide prehospital basic life support (BLS) care to victims of injury and illness. A Firefighter/EMT will make medical decisions based on standing orders, protocols, and orders from on and offline medical direction.

Duties

Above the generalized list of duties, the employee is responsible for all other duties as assigned by the rank of captain or above.

  • Perform inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment at required intervals and after all incident responses.
  • Provide emergency medical services and fire suppression services.
  • The ability to perform fire ground activities and duties as assigned.
  • Participate in fire prevention inspections and pre-planning.
  • Operate all necessary equipment required for the performance of EMS and fire suppression work.
  • The ability to read understand the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook and NFPA Hazardous Materials Handbook.
  • Participate in cleaning and minor maintenance of quarters, equipment, and apparatus.
  • Perform medical assessment and procedures based on current certification level and medical direction.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Must possess National Registry EMT-B (Must be able to obtain AZDHS EMT certification prior to hire date.)
    • IFSAC Firefighter I & II or equivalent
    • Hazardous Materials Operations
    • Arizona class D Driver’s License
    • Must maintain driver insurability under tribal insurance
    • ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
    • Must pass a Federal, State and Local Background Check
    Preferred/Desirable
    • Associates Degree in fire science, public administration or other related field
    • MAG 300, 400
    • Wildland FFT2
    • Engine Boss
    • Ropes Rescue I, II, III

    Any combination of education, training and experience which provides required requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position, may be substituted for evaluation at the discretion of the Director/Fire Chief

    Required Knowledge,

    Skills and Abilities
    • Ability to maintain AZDHS/NREMT EMT.
    • Ability to exhibit adequate verbal and written skills in business English.
    • Ability to operate a two-way radio.
    • Ability to demonstrate telephone communication skills must be adequate.
    • Ability to speak before groups of people of various sizes and ages is desirable.
    • Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with various Tribal, Federal, State and Local agencies in the field of emergency services, enforcement, and community development.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented approach.
    • Ability to use various equipment and safety devices such as monitors, protective clothing, body substance isolation techniques etc. when handling patients in the emergency setting.
    • Ability to safely operate fire department apparatus.
    • Ability to operate basic hand tools, forcible entry devices, extrication equipment, generators, lighting equipment, ventilation equipment and specialized rescue devices.
    • Ability to use various equipment and safety devices such as monitors, SCBA, protective clothing, EMS, etc. in the handling of emergency situations.
    Performance Aptitude

    Physical abilities:
    Frequently sits, talks, hears and stands for potentially extended periods of time. Walks and uses hands to manipulate, handle and operate objects, tools, or controls. Reaches with hands and arms. Occasionally climbs or balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, and crawls. Employee is required to have near vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
