School Nurse (Registered Nurse)

Position Summary

The School Nurse promotes and protects the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff by providing direct nursing services, managing chronic health conditions, ensuring compliance with Arizona requirements, and contributing to a healthy school environment. The nurse collaborates with families, school personnel, healthcare providers, and community resources to remove health-related barriers to learning.

Student Health Services

  • Provide first aid and emergency care for illness or injury; contact parents/guardians and EMS as appropriate.
  • Document all health office visits, treatments, feedings, screenings, injuries, and illnesses in the Student Information System (SIS) per district procedures.
  • Review, maintain, and update student health records (immunizations, allergies, chronic conditions, treatments, and screening results).
  • Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications per physician orders, Arizona law, district policy, and established nursing care plans.
  • Secure all medications in locked storage; maintain accurate logs for medication administration and procedures (e.g., blood glucose testing, insulin dosing/pump calculations, epinephrine administration, catheterization, tube feedings, suctioning).
  • Conduct vision, hearing, pediculosis, blood pressure, and other state-required screenings.
  • Identify and assess students with chronic or emerging health conditions; monitor status and follow care protocols.
  • Complete incident and mandated health reports.

Care Plans & Compliance

  • Develop and implement Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for students with identified medical needs, with parent/guardian and provider input.
  • Participate in IEP and Section 504 meetings when student health needs are involved.
  • Audit and monitor compliance with immunization requirements, health screenings, medication administration practices, and health file maintenance.
  • Follow universal precautions and infection control standards; adhere to all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Report suspected child abuse, communicable diseases, and other mandated concerns to the principal and required agencies.
  • Inform administrators and relevant staff of students with significant medical needs while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Provide health education and materials to students, staff, and families, including information on contagious diseases.
  • Collaborate with campus leadership to promote a safe and healthy school environment.
  • Advise administrators during health-related crises and emergencies.
  • Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with students, staff, parents, and community partners.

Administration & Documentation

  • Maintain confidential student health records in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA (as applicable), Arizona requirements, and district policies.
  • Requisition and maintain health supplies, equipment, and inventory.
  • Compile, maintain, and submit required reports and documentation.
  • Report potential health and safety hazards to the principal.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Instruction & Professional Development

  • Assist with health curriculum development and provide health-related instruction to students, staff, and families.
  • Maintain compliance with the Arizona Nurse Practice Act and Arizona Board of Nursing (AZBN) rules.
  • Attend ADE School Nurse trainings and maintain required certifications.

Other Duties

  • Maintain a high level of ethical conduct and confidentiality.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program (ACEN or CCNE).
  • Completion of ADE-approved Seizure Action Plan training (SB1654).

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Arizona RN license or Nurse Licensure Compact privilege.
  • Valid Arizona DPS Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (required prior to employment and throughout service).
