PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR/Grade 74.

An employee in this position is responsible for the management and direction of Wilkes County’s Parks and Recreation Program involving administrative, supervisory, and promotional duties. Work includes projection and management of annual and capital budgets, grants writing and administration, planning for parks and recreation program expansion, enhancement and maintenance, and development of department policies and procedures. The employee performs professional athletic work and assists in ball field maintenance on limited basis.
Work involves extensive public contact with private groups, civic organizations, officials, and the general public in the promotion, development, operation, and maintenance of the parks and recreation programs requiring firmness, tact, and courtesy. Sound judgment and initiative are required. Employee is exposed to indoor and outdoor environments, extreme temperatures, and other hazards associated with parks and recreation work. Duties may also expose the employee to human bodily fluids and thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirement on blood borne pathogens.
Work is performed under the supervision of the County Manager and is reviewed through periodic conferences, reports, results, and the public’s acceptance of the programs and operations. Desirable education and experience:
Graduation from four-year college or university with a degree in recreation administration, physical education, or related degree and considerable experience in the management of a recreation program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Position requires some Emergency Call-Back after hours/weekends and may require work during inclement weather. Open until filled.
