Flexible. Monday - Friday, may include weekends. 20 (academic year) to 40 hours/week (Winter/Spring Break). No holiday pay or make‑up hours.
Summary/Objective of Position:Up to five Undergraduate Research Assistants will support the forestry health research project. UG RAs will assist with field and laboratory work, including sample collection, preparation, and analysis focused on forest health and ecosystem monitoring. They will also be trained in advanced field and molecular techniques such as assessing pinyon cores, needles, cones, and sap, as well as conducting DNA sequencing.
This role gives UG RAs hands‑on experience in environmental science, training in research methods, and opportunities to develop critical thinking skills. They will contribute to work that supports sustainable forest management and ecological resilience, while preparing for future careers or graduate study in STEM.

- Conduct advanced field and molecular techniques, including assessment of pinyon cores, needles, cones, sap, and DNA sequencing.
- Collect and handle samples in the field following safety protocols.

Prior research experience, particularly in environmental science or laboratory settings.

- Ability to accurately follow protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to maintain detailed and accurate records of activities and data.
- Competency in using laboratory equipment, such as pipettes, balances, and basic analytical tools.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with team members and presenting findings.
- Basic data entry and analysis skills using software such as Microsoft Excel or similar tools.
- Ability to perform physical tasks related to fieldwork, such as collecting and transporting samples.
- Apply scientific knowledge and technical skills in research tasks.
