Description

The Ameri Corps position with Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC) is affiliated with Conservation Legacy. The member will serve with Coconino National Forest and complete service projects with the forest as part of AZCC/Conservation Legacy programs.

Purpose

The Heritage Program on the Red Rock Ranger District works to identify, document, and protect archaeological, historical, and cultural resources. The program supports responsible management of public lands by ensuring compliance with federal cultural resource laws while facilitating recreation, timber, fuels, range, habitat restoration, and other land management projects.

Description of Duties

The Heritage Intern will support cultural resource surveys, maintain heritage records, and assist with NHPA compliance activities to enable forest management projects. The intern will help protect cultural resources while supporting projects that improve forest health, reduce wildfire risk, restore habitat, and enhance recreational opportunities.

The Heritage Intern will spend significant time conducting cultural resources surveys, monitoring project implementation, and reporting results. They may lead lower-level technicians and volunteers as a crew lead and/or project manager for Section 106/110 projects.

Additional duties may include preparing survey results for environmental analyses, conducting cultural resource monitoring, producing site sketches and photo documentation, maintaining project records, and supporting interdisciplinary teams working on recreation, fuels, timber, range, and restoration projects.

Qualifications
  • United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or a related field
  • Valid driver's license and insurable by Conservation Legacy
  • Experience in archaeological field surveys, excavations, and artifact analysis
  • Knowledge of archaeological methods and field survey procedures
  • Ability to interpret and record archaeological findings accurately
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Preferred:
    Southwest and Northern Arizona experience; GIS proficiency; experience with interpretative materials
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or enrollment in a graduate program in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, or related field
  • Experience on archaeological projects in forested environments
  • Artifact conservation and curation experience
  • Proficiency with GIS software and archaeological tools
  • Experience leading interpretative materials or public discussions

Time Requirements

Evaluation and Reporting

Performance is evaluated based on completed hours, satisfactorily completed assignments, and other clearly communicated criteria. Bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking are required.
