Summary

Under general direction, performs enhanced inmate services and release coordination for inmates with SUD (Substance Use Disorder) and those with co‑occurring disorders who are high‑needs due to substance use. Performs special projects and programs as directed by the Sheriff or command staff.

Grant Funding Information

The Sheriff's Office SUD Coordinator is a temporary grant‑funded position. The position will require pursuing future grant opportunities to sustain funding. If grant funding is canceled, the position is automatically eliminated and the employee will be laid off. Grant‑funded positions may be full‑time or part‑time, regular or temporary, with benefits matching regular positions when fully funded.

Essential Job Functions
  • Prepare departmental or other reports as required.
  • Oversee all contracted services, data collection, and reporting requirements and ensure programs comply with all Federal, State and County guidelines.
  • Oversee in‑custody SUD treatment program and provide security screenings and release planning for program participants.
  • Provide programming for inmates.
  • Train staff for in‑custody treatment program.
  • Advocate for inmates with SUD and co‑occurring disorders.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical and justice stakeholders to compile information to identify treatment options and provide service linkage for inmates with SUD and/or co‑occurring disorder upon release.
  • Coordinate with courts and criminal justice partners to ensure all court appointments and obligations are met. Assist courts in establishing release conditions that include inpatient and/or outpatient SUD and/or behavioral health services, as dictated by a treatment plan.
  • Interface and coordinate with Detention personnel regarding the facilitation of services for inmates with SUD.
  • Attend community meetings and coordinate the programs available through the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Work directly with inmates and staff to ensure Reentry Services are delivered and make program improvements.
  • Promote and adhere to the mission, vision and values of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all work‑related issues, records and restricted information.
  • Collaborate with third parties, court personnel, and other criminal justice and behavioral health partners.
  • Commit to confidentiality, equity and trauma‑informed approaches in all client interactions.
  • Ensure strict adherence to HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality in all interactions, documentation and information sharing.
  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Sheriff or Command staff.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Understand and apply various policies and procedures impacting the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Be proficient in federal, state and local laws, regulations, rules and ordinances related to local government operations.
  • Apply principles and practices of supervision and public administration.
  • Apply all forms of clerical and office practices and procedures.
  • Utilize research and report writing skills.
  • Analyze complex legislative issues and recommend solutions.
  • Research, evaluate and use new methods and techniques for operational improvements.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a correctional environment.
  • Present using various forms of audio‑video equipment.
  • Know DSM‑V diagnoses.
  • Understand law enforcement activities and details related to behavioral health.
Desirable Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D.; bachelor’s degree in behavioral science, health, criminal justice or a related field; minimum of two (2) years of progressive responsible experience in a detention or behavioral health setting; valid AZ driver’s license. Equivalent combinations of directly related work experience and education may substitute for the degree requirement on a year‑per‑year basis.

Employee Benefits

Navajo County offers a comprehensive employee benefits package to regular employees working forty hours a week, with pro‑rated benefits for part‑time employees (30–39 hours) and no benefits for temporary or less‑than‑thirty‑hour employees.
