Job DescriptionPosition Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the teacher facilitates student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills by implementing district-approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress, addressing specific educational needs, creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment, and providing feedback to students, parents and administration.
- Develop and administer curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction.
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and translate lesson plans into learning experiences.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning, scaffold and modify instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including students with special needs; conduct individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Instruct students in responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the school system.
- Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn about current developments in education by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or conducting research.
- Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping, working with General Education Teacher(s) when grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensure that student conduct conforms with school standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining a functional learning atmosphere.
- Coordinate with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, state standards, and essential standards, and participate in faculty meetings and professional learning committees.
- Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, supplies and equipment, maintaining inventory records.
- Supervise students during activities outside the classroom, including transportation activities.
- Administer standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators.
Equipment- Standard office equipment such as computer, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
- Possible use of student assistive equipment.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, differentiating instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of grade-level curriculum, standards (alternative standards for students on alternate assessment), Individual Education Program(s), and concepts.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation for performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Work in a public school setting.
- Occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.
- Occasional student behavior support.
- Occasional physical assistance for student evacuation or lockdown procedures.
- Occasional personal care for students.
- Must be capable of safely traversing all assigned areas of the school facility.
Arkansas State Certification as a special education teacher.
EducationBachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
ExperienceSuccessful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels preferred.
