Sociology Instructor (Part-Time Faculty Pool) – Fresno City College

Essential Functions of the Position
  • Teach a part‑time schedule of sociology courses as assigned.
  • Use a variety of pedagogies and integrate innovative and creative uses of technology for face‑to‑face, online, and/or hybrid formats.
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Apply effective teaching methods appropriate to the subject matter, maintaining adherence to the institutionally approved curriculum course outlines.
  • Evaluate student progress through tests, examinations, written assignments, oral responses, and other assessment methods aligned with course objectives.
  • Provide course syllabi to students and maintain classroom records in accordance with District policy.
  • Submit all required student grading and evaluation reports in a timely manner.
  • Teach in a variety of instructional settings and times, including classes as needed.
  • Fulfill all duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, with a commitment to equity‑minded practice.
  • Either a Master’s in sociology; or a Bachelor’s in sociology and a Master’s in anthropology, ethnic studies, social work, or psychology; or a valid California Community College Credential; or equivalent education and/or experience (requiring an equivalency).
  • Petition for equivalency if degrees do not exactly match the stated criteria.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into all responsibilities.
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students.
  • Commitment to examining and improving instructional, relational, and classroom practices for engagement of racially minoritized students.
  • Graduate coursework in sociology and breadth of teaching experience at the post‑secondary level.
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, ethnic backgrounds, and disabilities.
  • Knowledge of multicultural and cross‑cultural communication and sensitivity to diverse student populations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and community partners to enhance instruction and student success.
  • Proficiency with computers and instructional technologies.
  • Strong communication skills with students and staff.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials; familiarity with the community college mission and goals.
Salary and Benefits
  • New hires placed on step one of the Part‑Time Faculty Salary Schedule.
  • Salary classification based on education and experience as outlined in the Part‑Time Faculty Salary Classifications.
  • Sick leave accrual based on assignment hours.
Selection Procedure

The selection and hiring process for part‑time faculty positions is governed by the hiring department. The department will contact applicants directly for further questions or interview invitations. No closing date; applications accepted on an ongoing basis and retained in the continuous pool for 18 months.
