Civil Design and Engineering Technical Lead
Hybrid Role
Role PurposeWe are seeking an experienced and highly capable Lead Civil Engineer to act as the technical authority for civil engineering across a wide portfolio of electricity infrastructure projects. This senior role will provide discipline leadership for civil design within our Power & Grid team, ensuring the delivery of compliant, constructible and cost‑effective solutions for substations, BESS, cable routes, overhead lines, switchyards, compounds, foundations, highways interfaces, drainage, and earthworks.
You will lead technical excellence, mentor and develop civil engineers, embed robust design governance, and promote safe‑by‑design principles. This role is ideally suited to a Chartered Engineer (ICE) with significant experience (typically 20+ years) in civil engineering for DNO/TSO clients, EPC frameworks or major grid‑related infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities- Technical Leadership & Governance
- Act as the Discipline Technical Lead and single point of accountability for civil design quality, methodologies, and outputs.
- Develop and maintain civil engineering standards, templates, checklists and design strategy aligned with MITIE's QMS and industry standards.
- Lead design reviews, inter‑discipline coordination, constructability and operability assessments.
- Approve/author key technical deliverables including calculations, drawings, reports, specifications and technical notes.
- Ensure compliance with CDM 2015, Eurocodes, BS EN standards, BS 6031/8004/8002, SuDS, National Highways DMRB (where relevant), and client‑specific standards (e.g., NG, UKPN, SSEN, WPD, SPEN).

- Own the design assurance cycle including QA/QC processes, RAG status monitoring and readiness for construction.
- Lead optioneering, value engineering and risk reduction for safe, compliant and efficient outcomes.
- Oversee survey scoping and interpretation (topographical, GI, utilities, LIDAR, drainage) to inform design decisions and residual risk assessments.
- Provide technical support during construction, including NCR resolution, concessions and as‑built reviews.
- People Development & Capability Building
- Support the Civil Design Manager in developing a structured technical competency framework and progression pathways.
- Mentor engineers and technicians, providing day‑to‑day coaching, design feedback and CPD guidance.
- Promote a learning culture through lessons learned, knowledge sharing and engineering reviews.
- Identify future technical leaders and support engineers through Chartership routes (ICE).
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive team environment across disciplines and delivery partners.
- Stakeholder & Client Management
- Act as technical interface to clients, landowners, planning authorities, highways, drainage boards and utilities.
- Present design solutions, defend technical decisions and manage scope changes professionally.
- Support bid development, proposals, estimates and technical assumptions.
- Safety, Environment & Quality
- Champion safe‑by‑design and ensure CDM residual risks are clearly articulated and traceable.
- Integrate environmental and sustainability principles, including PAS 2080 thinking and low‑carbon design approaches.
- Ensure outputs comply with MITIE's Quality Policy and QMS; lead internal audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Digital Engineering & Innovation
- Promote the adoption of Civil 3D, Revit, drainage modelling, geotechnical tools and digital workflows.
- Lead innovation pilot projects such as parametric design, digital rehearsals and reality capture.
- Drive measurable improvements in model coordination, automation and digital delivery.
