The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking a highly motivated and well‑rounded individual to join our team at the Paris District Headquarters. This role offers hands‑on experience in shaping the future of Texas transportation by improving safety and mobility across the region.
This job opening is for one Transportation Engineer I or II, depending on business need and the applicant’s qualifications. Qualification and experience will determine the applicant’s position and pay. TxDOT reserves the sole right to determine the level of the position based on the applicant’s work experience, education, skill level and other appropriate factors.
Salary ranges:
- Transportation Engineer I – $65,104 to $106,634 yearly
- Transportation Engineer II – $69,572 to $114,099 yearly

Position DescriptionTransportation Engineer I
Performs transportation engineering work in functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires regular contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer II
Performs complex transportation engineering work in functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires regular contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential DutiesTransportation Engineer I
- Assists in overseeing contracts, issuing work orders, monitoring construction schedules, contractor payments, and job progress on construction projects.
- Assists with the development of design and project development reports, surveys and correspondence.
- Coordinates phases of preliminary design and revisions in PS/ E with districts, divisions, administration, the FHWA, contractors, fabricators, Corps of Engineers, and local entities.
- Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
- Performs and/or documents in‑house research studies.
- Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts.
- Performs planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies.
- Provides assistance in preparing reports on pavement conditions.
- Reviews and revises schematics, PS/ E, project designs, shop drawings and field changes for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, electrical distribution and roadway lighting and traffic management systems.
- Reviews, processes and certifies project design plans developed by consulting engineers.
- Writes reports, specifications and test procedures.
