Job Summary

The Person al Care Assistant (PCA) works as an intermittent employee under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse and the direct day-to-day supervision of the Qualified Supervisor or county Caseworker. This position does not have a set regular work schedule, but will work only on an as-needed basis for client assignment. This position provides non-skilled care for program eligible frail elderly and disabled persons (clients) in the client’s homes while adhering strictly to the client’s plan of care and agency policy.

Therefore, the Personal Care Assistant should have ability to show interest, kindness, consideration and care for elderly and disabled citizens.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs duties of personal care for assigned clients in an effective and efficient manner as outlined on plan of care.
  • Signs in and out using electronic visit verification (EVV) to record client visits by location, date, time, and tasks.
  • Arrives and leaves at designated times assigned and must spend designated length of time in the client’s home, following the assigned schedule consistent with the client’s plan of care.
  • Notifies the client and supervisor if unable to report at client’s home by designated time, as well as reporting any other change in schedule.
  • Reports any change of client’s medical, emotional, financial or living condition immediately to R.N., Qualified Supervisor, or Caseworker.
  • Completes all agency provided trainings and in-services to comply with licensure requirement of 12 hours per year promptly as scheduled by supervisor.
  • Adheres strictly to ethics, privacy and HIPAA laws, rules and regulations.
  • Adheres to other policies and procedures as stated in the agency’s Intermittent Personal Care Assistant Handbook and Guidelines.
  • Must be able to perform the work assigned safely, responsibly and physically.
  • Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of the supervisor or management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Basic Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Personal Care Assistant 40-hour training certificate; successful completion of written and skills tests
  • Clear drug screen and background checks as required by position.
  • Provide own transportation.
  • Valid driver’s license and current auto liability insurance provided to supervisor prior to work assignment and throughout employment with agency.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to complete necessary paperwork.
  • Ability to complete record client visits by location, date, time, and tasks with EVV devices.
  • Ability and willingness to accept supervision by following written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to move objects weighting up to 50 pounds from one location to another during course of assigned work.
  • Ability to support clients by providing personal hygiene, housekeeping and laundry services, shopping for food and other household requirements, preparing and serving meals and snacks, and running errands.
