POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Surgical Technologist assists surgeons and nursing staff in providing high-quality patient care during surgical procedures within the Ambulatory Surgery Center. This role is responsible for maintaining a sterile environment, preparing surgical equipment and supplies, and supporting the surgical team throughout procedures in accordance with established policies and clinical standards.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare operating rooms by ensuring all surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment are properly disinfected, assembled, and functioning appropriately
  • Assist surgeons and surgical staff during procedures by anticipating needs and passing sterile instruments, supplies, and sutures efficiently
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique throughout all surgical procedures and immediately report any breaks in sterile technique
  • Handle and isolate contaminated instruments and supplies in accordance with infection prevention standards
  • Receive, label, and prepare specimens for laboratory processing
  • Clean and restock operating rooms following procedures
  • Assist with maintaining inventory and stocking surgical supplies
  • Support a positive, collaborative, and patient-focused team environment
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership or physicians
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program required
  • Current Surgical Technologist certification required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Minimum of one year of operating room experience preferred
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered
  • Membership in a surgical specialty organization is encouraged

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position requires prolonged standing, lifting, stooping, grasping, talking, and hearing throughout the workday.

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds regularly
  • Requires close visual acuity for surgical procedures and equipment handling
  • Exposure to blood borne pathogens, communicable diseases, chemicals, steam, sharp instruments, and moving equipment may occur
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Employees are expected to complete all required training during the initial orientation period, including instruction related to surgical technology, ophthalmic terminology, ocular diseases, equipment usage, and safety standards.

Certification growth within the optometric and ophthalmic field is encouraged. Cataract & Laser Institute supports employee development through our Employee Career Development Program.
