Job Overview
Travelers is seeking a Lead Architect to grow and transform our Enterprise Technology Solutions organization. The role designs and guides technology vision to enable business transformation, specializing in cloud‑native technologies, APIs, AI/ML, and emerging platforms to build scalable, enterprise‑wide solutions.
ResponsibilitiesScope:
Own architecture for multiple technology and business segments within a single business unit.
Technical Execution:
Lead enterprise database migration and modernization strategy, overseeing transition of SQL Server, Oracle, Postgre
SQL, MySQL, Maria
DB, Mongo
DB and other on‑premises databases to cloud platforms such as AWS RDS, Aurora, DMS, Azure SQL, and Oracle Databaseelop migration sequencing, tooling standards, reference architectures, and database engineering standards covering high availability, replication, performance tuning, schema governance, and observability.
Design and implement database disaster recovery and resiliency frameworks with automated failover, backup validation, and compliance‑aligned retention. Define data migration strategy for on‑premises block storage, file systems, archive repositories, and backup platforms to cloud solutions (AWS S3, EFS, Glacier, FSx, Backup). Architect end‑to‑end data platforms across hybrid and cloud environments, covering ingestion, storage, processing, transformation, and consumption layers.
Develop storage platform standards for block, file, object, and archive tiers, including provisioning, capacity management, encryption, replication, and cost optimization. Lead Fin Ops for data platform decisions, modeling total cost of ownership and optimizing storage tiering. Drive continuous technology transformation to reduce technical debt and prototype new solutions.
Architect cloud‑native data and database solutions on AWS, with knowledge of Azure and GCP for multi‑cloud and hybrid scenarios. Define infrastructure‑as‑code standards, SLAs/SLOs, and reliability engineering practices across data and database services. Evaluate and adopt emerging data technologies such as managed database services, streaming platforms, lake houses, and vector/graph databases.
Drive platform security posture, including encryption, secrets management, IAM governance, and network isolation for data workloads.
Strategic Accountability:
Partner with Lines of Business and technology stakeholders to translate business requirements into platform capabilities that enable digital transformation. Collaborate with ETS teams—security, operations, application development—to align architecture with enterprise standards and ensure seamless service delivery.
Mentor and develop engineers and DBAs, fostering a culture of engineering excellence and continuous learning. Provide thought leadership on modern architecture principles and technology modernization.
QualificationsTechnical Expertise &
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in technology‑related field or equivalent with 8–10 years of architecture experience. Advanced-level architecture and recent hands‑on engineering experience with modern technologies. Proven execution of complex, large‑scale technology strategies.
Leadership & Influence:
Advanced leadership skills with cross‑functional collaboration, building credibility, prioritizing architectural challenges, and strengthening the Architecture organization through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and development opportunities.
Strategic & Business Acumen:
Agile operational model experience, supporting transformational change, adjusting plans in response to changing circumstances, and developing technology target states and roadmaps aligned to business goals. Insurance technology experience preferred, with strong understanding of value creation and business capability models.
Analytical & Communication:
Strong ability to analyze current and future problems, evaluate information, identify root causes, and explore solutions. Excellent verbal, written, and listening skills.
