Position OverviewWe’re seeking a hands‑on Manufacturing Engineer with strong expertise in welding and fabrication to support and improve our welding operations. This role combines engineering knowledge with practical shop‑floor experience to develop, optimize, troubleshoot, and standardize welding processes across new and existing products. This position is responsible for welding process performance, weld quality, and the implementation of welding technologies, while supporting safety, productivity, and cost objectives.
You will work closely with production teams, providing direct technical support, mentoring welders, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop, implement, and maintain welding processes for new and existing products.
- Create and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and supporting documentation.
- Establish weld parameters, fixtures, tooling, and work instructions.
- Evaluate customer drawings and specifications for manufacturability.
- Support quoting activities with labor estimates, weld process selection, and equipment recommendations.
- Ensure compliance with applicable welding codes and customer requirements.
- Serve as a technical mentor for welders and trainers to support skill development and craftsmanship.
- Provide direct shop‑floor support to welders, supervisors, and production personnel.
- Troubleshoot daily production issues related to safety, weld quality, dimensional stability, fixturing, productivity, scrap, and rework.
- Perform weld trials and process validation activities.
- Identify and implement process improvements through fixture design, weld sequencing, and workflow optimization.
- Lead projects focused on safety, quality, productivity, scrap reduction, and labor efficiency.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action activities.
- Bachelor’s in Manufacturing Engineering, Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical field preferred.
- 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience in a welding or fabrication environment.
- Demonstrated hands‑on welding knowledge and troubleshooting capability.
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills with a data‑driven mindset.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with production teams.
- Experience supporting high‑mix, low‑to‑medium‑volume manufacturing operations.
- Strong understanding of:
- PFMEA, control plans, and process validation.
- Lean manufacturing principles.
- Root cause analysis and structured problem‑solving.
- Weld symbols, blueprint reading, and GD&T.
- Weld fixture design and process development.
- GTAW (TIG), spot, and projection welding.
- Strong hands‑on welding ability and proven troubleshooting capability.
- Ability to build credibility with production teams through practical, shop‑floor knowledge.
- Strong communication and training skills, with the ability to coach and develop others.
- Ability to lead projects and influence cross‑functional teams.
- Results‑oriented mindset with a focus on safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
- AWS certifications (CWI, CWE, CWEng).
- Experience with AWS welding codes (D1.1, D1.2, D17.1).
- CAD experience (Solid Works, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar).
- Experience welding Aluminum 5052 and 3003.
- Core hours: 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Additional hours as needed to support production, launches, or issue resolution.
This role is best suited for a Manufacturing Engineer who is not only capable of designing and improving welding processes but also of stepping onto the shop floor, diagnosing weld issues firsthand, picking up a torch to coach welders, and implementing practical solutions that improve quality and productivity.
