Summary
The Welder 3 performs complex manual and semi-automatic arc welding, including x-ray quality welding, on the railcar pressure vessel using weld machines. This position will properly visually inspect weld work and performs repairs on defective welds. They will provide training assistance to other welders that need development. This position will be required to operate a forklift and crane.
Duties and Responsibilities- Perform the most complicated manual or semi-automatic arc welding of railcar parts on the pressure vessel, sub-assemblies, and assemblies on the bench, floor, or assembly line.
- When using weld machine, maintain heat and speed of travel to assure penetration and weld bead size. Grind work incidental to welding, remove weld slag, and preheat work.
- Visually inspect weld work, repair defective welds, and perform minor repairs to equipment.
- Perform occasional air arc or flame cutting to help repair defective welds.
- Help train other welders in classes 1 and 2 by conducting on-the-job training when requested.
- Operate forklift or hook and hitch to overhead crane to move material.
- Ensure that safety and housekeeping standards are met and maintained.
Minimum Qualifications
- Required to pass applicable welding tests to work as a welder, including tests for welding on a pressure vessel
- Ability to use weld gauges and computers
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints or weld drawings and procedures
- Ability to work in a team
- Ability to learn to operate a forklift and overhead crane and complete certifications required through company training
- High School diploma or equivalency test/GED
- 1+ years’ experience in production welding
- Experience operating a forklift
- Experience operating an overhead crane
Physical Requirements Work Environment
- This position is in a production environment with exposure to heat, cold, noise, moving machinery and trip hazards where personal protective equipment such as head, eye, hearing, and foot protection, including composite toed safety shoes, are required.
- This position may be exposed to welding, machining, forming, metal surface treatment, laser cutting, plasma cutting, and other metal working and assembly processes.
- Additional PPE may be required as determined by the environment.
