Job Description
Job Title: School Nurse
Reports To: Principal
Contracted Days: 180
Job Summary: Is responsible for direct childcare, appraisal and follow‑up of caseload. Prepares health care plans for involved students and supervises the implementation of required health care procedures.
Essential Duties- Screens students for health defects, including height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis, and kindergarten screenings.
- Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians and oversees procedures for office staff to administer medications in the absence of the school nurse.
- Conducts parent conferences and maintains liaison between physicians, parents, and staff.
- Makes recommendations to primary care physician on health needs of individual students.
- Maintains up‑to‑date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention, including immunization records and exemptions for religious and medical reasons.
- Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters.
- Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
- Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures and district policies.
- Implements board policy on exclusion and re‑admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
- Conducts training for students related to impairments, health, and hygiene.
- Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
- Is available to do health‑related lesson presentations in classrooms.
- Observe professional ethics and confidentiality.
- Other duties may be assigned.
- Bachelor's or Associate’s degree in nursing. Pediatric experience preferred.
- License from the State of Arkansas to practice as a Registered Nurse.
The employee will occasionally sit, walk or stand. The employee will occasionally reach forward or above the head more than the average person. Ability to drive to various buildings in the district. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move and push up to 90 pounds such as students and students in wheelchairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
