The Department of Algal Development and Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen is seeking a highly motivated Technical Assistant to support cutting-edge research in algal biology. The successful candidate will play a central role in maintaining our internationally recognized algal culture facility and supporting molecular biology projects investigating the development, evolution, and virus–host interactions of brown algae.

Your Responsibilities
  • Maintain and propagate algal cultures under sterile (axenic) conditions.
  • Prepare algal material for research projects across the laboratory.
  • Perform nucleic acid extractions and routine molecular biology procedures (PCR, cloning, genotyping, etc.).
  • Contribute to the organization, optimization, and day-to-day management of the algal culture facility.
  • Assist with laboratory organization, stock management, and general technical support.
Your Profile
  • Completed training as a Biological Technical Assistant or a comparable qualification in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline.
  • Practical experience with sterile techniques, cell culture, microbiology, or molecular biology, ideally in a research laboratory.
  • Experience with molecular biology methods is desirable.
  • Previous experience working with algae is not required; full training will be provided.
  • Good command of English (the working language of the laboratory).
  • Well-organized, reliable, and able to work both independently and as part of an international team.
  • Curious, motivated, and enthusiastic about learning new techniques.
Our Offer
  • The opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in evolutionary and developmental biology using state-of-the-art molecular and cellular approaches.
  • Full training in algal cultivation and specialized experimental techniques.
  • A collaborative, international, and supportive working environment.
  • Excellent technical infrastructure and opportunities for professional development.
  • Job ticket allowance

The position is available from January 2027 and is limited for 2 years with the possibility of extension. Salary will be according to the German public service pay scale (TVöD), depending on qualifications and experience.
