Technical Assistant in Algal Cell Culture and Molecular Biology
The Department of Algal Development and Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen is seeking a highly motivated Technical Assistant to support cutting-edge research in algal biology. The successful candidate will play a central role in maintaining our internationally recognized algal culture facility and supporting molecular biology projects investigating the development, evolution, and virus–host interactions of brown algae.
Your Responsibilities- Maintain and propagate algal cultures under sterile (axenic) conditions.
- Prepare algal material for research projects across the laboratory.
- Perform nucleic acid extractions and routine molecular biology procedures (PCR, cloning, genotyping, etc.).
- Contribute to the organization, optimization, and day-to-day management of the algal culture facility.
- Assist with laboratory organization, stock management, and general technical support.
- Completed training as a Biological Technical Assistant or a comparable qualification in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline.
- Practical experience with sterile techniques, cell culture, microbiology, or molecular biology, ideally in a research laboratory.
- Experience with molecular biology methods is desirable.
- Previous experience working with algae is not required; full training will be provided.
- Good command of English (the working language of the laboratory).
- Well-organized, reliable, and able to work both independently and as part of an international team.

The position is available from January 2027 and is limited for 2 years with the possibility of extension. Salary will be according to the German public service pay scale (TVöD), depending on qualifications and experience.
