Role And Responsibilities

The Mechanical Startup Technician is responsible for the field-based startup of the mechanical equipment, pre-commissioning, testing, and initial hand-over of mechanical systems and equipment to the TAB contractor, 3rd party commissioning agent and/or owner.

This role ensures the newly installed mechanical systems (i.e. HVAC equipment, hydronic systems, pumps, compressors, and associated controls) are functional, efficient, safe, and meet design, manufacturer specifications, and MSS overall quality standards. The Technician will collaborate with the field installation teams, controls technicians, MSS engineers, and/or Project Managers to deliver reliable operation and support the transition to maintenance/operations teams.

  • Execute and document mechanical system and equipment startups: verify proper installation, electrical wiring is correct for all equipment, perform functional tests, and verify intended operation per design specs and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical equipment, systems, and operations during commissioning/startup phases. This may include diagnosing issues with VFDs, pumps, compressors, chillers, fans, hydronic loops, boilers, cooling towers, etc.
  • Read, interpret and work from mechanical drawings, P&IDs, wiring schematics, control sequences, installation/submittal documents, and manuals.
  • Coordinate with MSS management, GC, and/or onsite trade partners (i.e. electrical, controls, plumbing) to sequence startup activities, schedule resources and ensure proper functionality and a smooth hand-over to 3rd party commissioning and/or TAB.
  • Complete and maintain startup documentation and checklists
  • Assist with owner training/turnover support to facility operations or maintenance staff on system operation, controls, maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure QC standards align with applicable codes, safety standards, manufacturer instructions, and MSS internal quality procedures.
  • Travel from project to project and work in field/construction environments (ladders, rooftops, crawl spaces, heavy equipment).
  • Perform pre-functional checks on all equipment and complete all required documentation.
  • Responsible for all general pre-start activities including but not limited to removing shipping brackets, checking mounting of fans, isolators, and rotating parts ensuring smooth operation.
  • Help develop a fill and flush plan for hydronic systems and assist with flushing the system.
  • Perform pre-start verification factory check list, pressure testing, filters and cleaning of ALL mechanical equipment (AHUs, VFDs, Pumps, WSHPs, Chillers, CTs, etc.
  • Verify connections are correct on split systems wiring from outdoor unit to head unit and condensate pumps.
  • Help develop a testing matrix and assist testing of ductwork and pipe.
  • QC check for high point vents, drains, valve clearing, proper support, accessibility and control points.
  • Troubleshoot, open/close and check voltage of FSDs/Dampers.
  • Repair low voltage wiring.
  • Complete pump alignments.
Qualifications And Requirements
  • EPA Refrigerant License
  • Ability to pass MVR requirements to drive a company vehicle
  • Previous experience in residential or light commercial split-level install
  • Ability to evacuate and recharge systems
  • Must successfully pass a background check and drug test
  • Attending or completed HVAC technical training
