What Is the Opportunity?Travelers Data Engineering team constructs pipelines that contextualize and provide easy access to data for the entire enterprise. As a Data Engineer you will play a key role in growing and transforming the analytics landscape, designing, building, and deploying data solutions that support Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and business intelligence.
Responsibilities- Build and operationalize complex data solutions, correct problems, apply transformations, and recommend data cleansing/quality solutions.
- Design data solutions and analyze sources to determine value and recommend data to include in analytical processes.
- Incorporate core data management competencies including data governance, data security and data quality.
- Collaborate within and across teams to support delivery and educate end users on data products and analytic environments.
- Perform data and system analysis, assessment and resolution for defects and incidents of moderate complexity and correct as appropriate.
- Test data movement, transformation code, and data components.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in STEM related field or equivalent.
- Six years of related experience.
- Strong data engineering fundamentals and principles, with hands‑on experience designing, building, and optimizing data pipelines.
- Proficient with cloud platforms and modern data technologies, including AWS (Lambda, Event Bridge, Step Functions, DynamoDB, Athena), Databricks (Notebooks, Jobs, Unity Catalog, Genie) and concepts such as Autoloader, streaming, and near‑real‑time data processing.
- Experience working with AI tools and concepts (e.g., Claude) and familiarity with developer productivity tools such as Git Hub Copilot.
- Comfortable using key engineering and Dev Ops tools, including Jira, Git Hub, Snyk, Service Now, and Autosys.
- Proficient programming skills and solid understanding of software engineering practices, including testing, CI/CD, and version control.
- Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace, break down complex tasks into small, incremental releases, and actively participate in trade‑off and negotiation discussions.
- Demonstrated domain expertise with the ability to quickly understand technical concepts and develop deep knowledge of the systems you support.
- Proven problem‑solving and debugging skills, including the ability to identify root causes in unfamiliar codebases and recognize and resolve recurring issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with team members, partners, and stakeholders.
- Intermediate leadership skills with a track record of self‑motivation, ownership, and a commitment to continuous learning and personal growth.
- Additional requirement: 2 additional years of software/data engineering experience over and above the Bachelor’s degree.
