Athletic Director

Job Description and Responsibilities

Reports to:

Superintendent

Coaches, SRO at Athletic Events, Gate Workers, Employees working at Athletic events

Position Summary

The Athletic Director (AD) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the school's athletic programs. This includes managing team schedules, supervising coaching staff, ensuring compliance with school district and state athletic regulations, coordinating transportation and facilities, and promoting student participation and sportsmanship, and work closely with faculty, parents, and community members to maintain a positive and inclusive athletic culture. The AD fosters a culture of sportsmanship and school pride.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and oversee all interscholastic athletic programs.
  • Supervise and evaluate coaches; ensure all coaches meet Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) certification and training requirements.
  • Coordinate athletic schedules, including games, practices and facility use.
  • Arrange transportation and lodging (if necessary) for away games and events.
  • Manage athletic department budget, including purchasing equipment and uniforms; handle equipment and uniforms inventory.
  • Ensure compliance with AAA rules, including eligibility, transfer policies, and student physicals.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise home events; coordinate ticketing, concessions, officials, security and facility preparation.
  • Promote academic accountability and character development among student-athletes.
  • Uphold high standards in the appearance and functionality of athletic facilities to promote school pride.
  • Collaborate with maintenance staff to ensure athletic facilities are safe, clean, and well-maintained.
  • Facilitate fundraising and booster club coordination.
  • Work cooperatively with Principals concerning academic and coaching assignments for all athletic personnel.
  • Ensure proper supervision of all student-athletes before and after practice, games, or other participatory events.
  • Promote community involvement, program and athlete successes, and school pride in athletic programs.
  • Work with administration to ensure that an administrator attends all athletic events and arrange for security at home events.
  • Responsible for field mowing, field maintenance, and painting of the lines at the football field.
  • Mediate the resolution of problems, issues, and concerns that may arise between coaches, student-athletes, parents, and athletic programs.
  • Approve all recommendations for athletic awards; plan and coordinate awards ceremonies and Athletic Banquet.
  • Obtain and secure officials for all athletic events.
  • Develop and maintain a District Athletic Handbook and an Emergency Action Plan.
  • Set up dates for physical examinations for students in athletic programs.
  • Report to the proper authorities any cases of suspected child endangerment, neglect, or abuse.
  • Perform other duties related to the athletic programs as assigned.
