We're looking for an enthusiastic, innovative, and service-oriented Cataloging Assistant who is technologically-savvy, self-motivated, and familiar with cataloging standards and tools. The Arlington Heights Memorial Library strives to amaze our customers by having the best books, movies, music and games available as quickly as possible.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: performing copy cataloging of materials in all formats in accordance with local and national standards; adding bibliographic/item records to the library catalog; assigning classification and call numbers to library materials; and completing various reclassification projects. The ideal candidate is flexible, collaborative, self-driven and brings a good sense of humor to the team.
You will:
- Search OCLC for bibliographic records, determines appropriate records, exports bibliographic records, performs descriptive and subject cataloging in accordance with local and national cataloging standards.
- Update library holdings in OCLC.
- Assign classification and call numbers to library materials.
- Add and/or edit item level information in local database as necessary for newly catalogued materials.
- Re-catalog or reclassify materials as requested.
- Keep up-to-date with cataloging issues, standards, and documentation.
- Create and maintain bibliographic and item records for the library's online catalog that is used by the public and by staff, including record management for withdrawals.
Requirements &
Skills:
- Ability to function positively, effectively and productively as part of a team member and independently.
- Clear oral and written communication skills with people of all ages and good computer skills.
- Experience in Sierra preferred.
- Knowledge of RDA, MARC, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Dewey Decimal Classification.
- Ability to work effectively with staff and customers in alignment with

Education:
Library Technical Assistant (LTA) degree preferred.
Copy cataloging experience preferred.
Hours and Scheduling
Part-Time 25 hours/week. Monday-Friday day shift.
Salary & Benefits
Starting salary $17.75 to $22.00/hour depending on qualifications.
Benefits include two weeks of prorated leave time, which include vacation, sick and personal time plus 7 paid holidays, participation in Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension plan, availability of Roth/457savings plan and other optional benefits such as pet insurance & identity theft protection.
