Job Description

POSITION: Special Education Teacher, (Social/Emotional Therapuetic, Supported Learning Classroom)

JOB GOAL: The Special Education Teacher will support students who receive some or all academic instruction in supported substantially separate and inclusion settings.

Qualifications &

Preferred Experience
  • Masters Degree in Special Education
  • Massachusetts Licensure as a Teacher of Special Education (Moderate or Severe Disabilities)
  • Ability to coordinate classroom and deliver specialized instruction for multiple learners with diverse learning styles
  • Proven ability to coordinate the efforts of classroom teachers, teacher assistants, and other related specialists
  • Knowledge of multiple formal and informal assessment tools and methods
  • Skill in interacting with parents of students in class
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Training in Trauma Sensitive practices
  • Experience working with students who have a variety of learning disabilities, cognitive and intellectual disabilities, social and emotional, and/or autism spectrum disabilities
  • Training in verbal de-escalation and non-violent physical restraint
  • Knowledge of and training in the Science of Reading
Performance Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with general and special educators, related service providers, and teaching assistants to design and implement effective instruction for students in accordance with students’ IEPs, academic, social, emotional, and therapeutic needs.
  • Complete academic assessments and support the Team eligibility for three year reevaluation process.
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs in compliance with all state and federal regulations and timelines governing the delivery of special education services.
  • Monitor and document student progress in compliance with all state and federal regulations governing the delivery of special education services.
  • Create and maintain student and paraprofessional schedules
  • Coordinate with related service providers in working with students on the caseload
  • Coordinate the activities of paraprofessionals, including providing inclusion opportunities as called for in students’ IEPs
  • Other related duties as assigned by Principal or Special Education Coordinator

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 183 Days

REPORTS TO:

Special Education Coordinator and Building Principal

Salary and Benefits are consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Arlington School Committee and the Arlington Education Association.

The Salary Schedule is on our website. Salary placement is based on Education and Experience.

Arlington has a well-established new teacher induction program with mentoring throughout the school year. The first official work day in the  school year will be August 31, 2026. However, new staff are required to attend several days of orientation and training during the last two weeks of August.
