Position: Senior Network Engineer
Job Goals: The Senior Network Engineer’s primary responsibility is to ensure the availability, health, and performance of Arlington’s IP networking environment, consisting of wired and wireless ethernet networks supporting both Arlington Public Schools and the Town of Arlington. They install, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot all network equipment, including core and edge ethernet switches, wireless access points and controllers, firewalls, VPN infrastructure, and external public internet connectivity.
They design redundant, highly available network architecture to maximize uptime, minimize end‑user disruption, and include disaster recovery planning. They collaborate with internal and external technical resources to ensure high quality service delivery.
- Installs, configures, administers, and monitors all network equipment, software, and Internet connections
- Works with IT management to define network policies and procedures
- Collaborates with other systems engineers to integrate the town and district’s authentication services (Active Directory, Microsoft Entra) with network services
- Assesses network security and performance on an ongoing basis and makes adaptations and recommendations as needed
- Maintains confidentiality of data stored, processed, or accessed by the network
- Collaborates with IT Security to ensure the security of the town and district’s network
- Develops and implements a plan to mitigate the impact of network equipment failures
- Provides timely updates to IT management on operational issues impacting availability of critical network systems and ensures resolution in a timely fashion
- Manages network technology vendors as needed
- Assists IT management in preparing the network portion of the technology roadmap and department budgets
- Provides network support training to Service Desk staff
- Communicates relevant network activities to staff and teams affected by changes or problems in voice and data networks
- Maintains an inventory of networking equipment, thoroughly documents the network topology, and implements department change management practices
- Performs network maintenance during designated maintenance windows
- Tracks network performance using monitoring tools and recommends improvements for overall operational visibility
- Performs other duties as required
- BA/BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent
- 5+ years’ experience in network administration, managing a heterogeneous layer 2/3 network with multiple ISP uplinks
- Experience with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise switching and wireless controllers, or equivalents (Cisco, Aruba, etc.)
- Experience with Watchguard Firebox firewalls or equivalent security appliances
- Experience supporting IP-based telephony (VoIP) using Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise or equivalent platform
- Advanced understanding of IPv4 fundamentals and security, including wireless network security, firewalls, RADIUS, DNS, DHCP; experience with OSPF, BGP a plus
- Understanding of IPv6 deployment
- Experience with Active Directory/LDAP and cloud-based identity platforms (Entra , Google) using SAML/OpenID Connect a plus
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex heterogeneous problems
- Experience managing enterprise virtual server environments (VMware, Nutanix) a plus
- Experience responding to network security incidents and follow‑up
- Experience with PCI environments and compliance
- Strong technical presentation skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to prioritize and multitask
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle to transport equipment
12‑month position reporting to Manager, Cybersecurity
Salary RangeSalary: $85,000 to $110,000 annually
