Job Description Arlington Community Schools Position Description DES Teacher Assistant-Regular Education

Minimum Qualifications and Training
  • The ESSA guidelines require that paraprofessionals (educational assistants) who provide instructional services must have fulfilled one of the following:
    • Obtained an associate's or higher degree; or
    • Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
    • Passed a test that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Two years experience working with children
  • Strong verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
Performance Responsibilities
  • Assist students, teachers, and others as directed
  • Assist students during lunch in the cafeteria setting
  • Administer, score, and record such achievements and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher
  • Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes
  • Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction
  • Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips
  • Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and makeup work as assigned
  • Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills
  • Know and follow all safety rules and procedures associated with the responsibilities of the position
  • Establish and maintain satisfactory, respectful working relationships within the school environment
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to move around well enough to perform the duties of the position safely. (i.e. some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight, some climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity)
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher and/or school principal.

Salary Range

based on education/previous experience related to the position

$16.02 - $17.69 (without a 4-year Bachelor degree)

$20.12 - $22.21 (with a 4-year Bachelor degree)

The teacher assistant for regular education works 7 hours per day (35 hours per week ten-month work year) with salary established by the Board of Education. Performance of this job will be evaluated according to procedures established by the Human Resources Department.
