Purpose of Position

The Library Specialist provides customer service and operational support in a library setting. This role assists users with accessing library resources, supports circulation and public service operations, and helps maintain organized and accessible collections. The position coordinates student employee activities, contributes to projects and assessments, collaborates with library teams, and supports programs, technologies, and initiatives that enhance the overall library experience and community engagement.

Functions
  • Provides high-quality customer service by assisting library users in person, by phone, and virtually with locating, accessing, and using library resources, services, and technologies in support of research, teaching, and learning needs.
  • Oversees daily public service operations such as circulation, reserves, and information services to ensure smooth and efficient workflow and consistent service coverage across library service points.
  • Trains and provides day-to-day guidance to student employees; may supervise student employees as assigned to support operations.
  • Maintains and organizes library collections and materials, ensuring accurate cataloging, shelving, and accessibility of print and electronic resources in accordance with library policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with colleagues and cross-departmental teams to implement projects, contribute to service enhancements, and support the overall mission and goals of the library.
  • Collects and reports data related to library services, usage trends, and staffing to support evidence-based decision-making and continuous improvement, while assisting with a variety of library initiatives and operations such as programs and events, technology support, and general administrative tasks to enhance overall service delivery and user experience.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school graduation or GED. A minimum of two (2) years of related experience providing support in library operations, information services, or customer assistance in a service-oriented environment. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in an academic library or related environment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Ability to analyze situations and make sound decisions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products:
    Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, One Drive/SharePoint, and other common office software.
  • Ability to effectively lead, cultivate, and empower staff.
Work Schedule
  • Sunday through Thursday;
    Sunday: 8:30 a.m. through 5:30 p.m.;
    Monday through Thursday: 6:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m.
  • Not hybrid eligible.
  • Flexibility is required to ensure the department is appropriately staffed in order to satisfy all service needs.
  • Professional development, conferences, and training may require travel and/or overnight accommodations.
