Overview

Job Summary The Kinesiology Department in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, the University of Texas at Arlington, invites applications for a tenured department Chair position. The Chair of the Department of Kinesiology is appointed by the Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation ( CONHI ) and is accountable to the Dean. The roles and functions of the Chair include leadership in the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the Department of Kinesiology and collaboration with other departments in the advancement of college priorities.

The Chair is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to all Kinesiology faculty by designing and executing a system of internal controls which ensures department operations are effective and efficient, department assets are safeguarded, department financial information is reliable, and the department complies with college and university policies as well as applicable laws and regulations. In accordance with USCIS regulations, successful applicants must be legally able to accept work in the United States.

We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. The Department is comprised of three undergraduate programs (a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science with tracks in Clinical & Applied Physiology, Health, Fitness & Wellness, and Motor & Rehabilitation Sciences; a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology with tracks in Physical Education Teacher Education and Sport Leadership and Management;

and a Bachelor of Science in Public Health). The department also offers three master’s programs — a Master of Science in Exercise Science, a Master of Science in Athletic Training, and Master of Public Health — as well as a Ph.D. in Kinesiology. The Department of Kinesiology is an active member of the American Kinesiology Association ( AKA ). We seek individuals with outstanding qualifications who share the University’s core values of excellence in innovative and collaborative research, coupled with fostering an open and inclusive environment to serve as the Chair for the Department of Kinesiology.

The College is particularly interested in recruiting an innovative leader who can lead the Department of Kinesiology and contribute to advancing health and the human condition. Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to education through their teaching, research, and service. Candidates must demonstrate active, externally funded research agendas with a strong history of funded research and scholarly productivity.

Required Qualifications

  • Tenured
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in disciplines or fields of study within the Department of Kinesiology.
  • 3-5 years of leadership experience in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Administration & Operations:

  • Provides leadership and strategic oversight to the Department of Kinesiology.
  • Recruits and retains qualified faculty for all programs; onboards, orients, and mentors new faculty.
  • Leads regular faculty meetings; coordinates all faculty teaching assignments and development of class schedules; serves on various internal and external committees.
  • Continually assesses the effectiveness of programs and operations through feedback, surveys, and other tools.
  • Develops annual budget.
  • Coordinates and oversees timely completion of reporting mechanisms, including Unit Effectiveness Process (UEP).
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and guidance for professional development for tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure track faculty members.
  • Engages as a member of the faculty in teaching, scholarly activity, professional development, service, and institution building, consistent with the University’s mission and with a focus on strategic priorities.

Curriculum, Accreditation, and

Certifications:

  • Leads the development and implementation of curricular changes; examines and analyzes student evaluations, faculty feedback, and changing industry standards and expectations; coordinates the approval of new programs.

Leadership:

  • Contributes to the mission through direct teaching, research/scholarship, and service. Serves as a role model in these areas.

Professional Development:

  • Maintains knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to ensure excellent and consistent leadership, management, and oversight of the Kinesiology department. Other duties as assigned.
