Academic Advisor III – Full‑time – Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Salary is commensurate with experience up to $55,000 (paid bi‑weekly). The position is located at the School of Social Work, Arlington, Texas.
Job SummaryThe Academic Advisor III provides direct academic advising to individuals or groups of Bachelor’s and Master’s level School of Social Work students to enhance the academic experience, student retention, and completion. The role involves administration and coordination of essential academic advising programs or initiatives, training and onboarding of new academic advisors, and may provide supervision of a small team of advisors and support staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct academic advising for current and prospective students using in‑person, virtual, phone, and email modalities.
- Provide guidance on academic topics such as degree requirements, course selection, and assistance with setting and achieving educational and career goals.
- Help students make informed academic decisions by teaching them how to track their own progress, locate and interpret policies, and use available tools and resources.
- Monitor the academic progress of a student caseload, proactively outreach to provide timely assistance.
- Conduct verification of degree progress, remove holds, and approve various forms to ensure timely student progression.
- Analyze and interpret student data, transcripts, and placement results.
- Enter advising notes into MyMav following best practices for documenting appointments and contacts.
- Provide daily oversight of advising best practices, communicate program requirements, create reports, and implement ongoing program improvement and assessment.
- Prepare reports and participate in data‑driven analyses and decision‑making processes.
- Represent the School of Social Work and the academic advising community in speaking engagements with students, advisors, parents, faculty, and administrators.
- Assist with training and onboarding of new academic advisors and may supervise a small team of advisors and support staff.
- Maintain a clear understanding of all applicable federal, state, and university policies and procedures.
- Keep abreast of relevant academic programs and support services such as counseling and tutoring, and provide appropriate referrals.
- Participate in meetings, professional conferences, and ongoing professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in Social Work or related field.
- Four (4) years of paid work experience in a human service field or in higher education or an equivalent relevant experience.
- Four (4) years of progressive academic advising experience at a public R1 university.
- Leadership and/or supervisory experience at a higher education institution.
- Experience implementing, monitoring, and assessing student development programs or projects.
- Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working collaboratively with students and coworkers from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
- Expertise in high‑impact academic advising practices, CAS standards, and university advisory policies, including probation, dismissal, and reinstatement procedures.
- Strong written and verbal interpersonal communication; organization, problem‑solving, and deadline management.
- Ability to lead others, collaborate, work independently, build strong relationships, handle sensitive information with confidentiality, run reports, and assess outcomes.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint). Working knowledge of the University Catalog.
