Special Education

FEDERALLY FUNDED

The salary for this position may be funded through federal grants. As a federally funded role, it is considered supplemental and contingent upon the continued availability of federal funding.

ROLE & PURPOSE

The Curriculum Coordinator for Special Education provides leadership and coordination to ensure the overall design and implementation of individualized educational programs and support services that are aligned and articulated with federal, state, and locally mandated regulations and curriculum. The coordinator organizes professional development and implementation of special education services and supports, and acts as a resource to other educational personnel and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION
  • Minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Professional principal, mid‑management, or supervisor certification issued by the Texas Education Agency
  • Valid Texas teacher's certificate with specialization in special education or related field preferred
EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum of five years experience in a special education related field
  • Leadership and/or administrative experience in leading the ARD and/or FIE evaluation process
  • Experience with coordination and support of daily operational issues by assisting area and campus administration in solving logistical and operational problems related to special education service delivery and compliance
  • Expertise facilitating services for low‑incidence populations, including those receiving vision and/or deaf education services, in the least restrictive environment
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT
  • Collaborate across departments for curriculum development, curriculum assessments, professional learning activities and campus support for teachers in grades EE‑12.
  • Implement a data‑informed systematic and sustained approach to professional learning including research‑based instructional strategies.
  • Direct the child‑centered process for the design of individualized educational programs.
  • Obtain and use data to examine curriculum and instructional program effectiveness and design, implement and measure the effectiveness of program interventions.
  • Implement and evaluate actions designed to meet and exceed the district instructional goals in special education.
  • Apply legislative decisions and regulations to the design and implementation of a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) for all eligible students.
  • Coordinate the design and implementation of processes and procedures for the identification of appropriate instructional supports and implementation of individualized educational programs.
  • Collaborate with campus administrators to monitor student response to specially designed instruction.
  • Work collaboratively with principals, department leaders, support staff, teachers and classroom teacher assistants to ensure that individualized instructional programs and services are coordinated at the school level and implemented with fidelity.
  • Facilitate the development of new courses specific to special education.
  • Research, plan, propose, implement, and evaluate new programs.
  • Implement and monitor compliance of grants as needed.
  • Apply sound research‑based principles and practices to support decision‑making and departmental goals and actions.
SCHOOL/ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE
  • Collaborate with key personnel across departments to ensure universal design of curriculum and instruction for all learners.
  • Create and monitor a collegial and team oriented atmosphere within the special education department.
  • Participate in the district‑level decision making processes to establish and review the goals and objectives of the Special Education department as it relates to the Strategic Plan.
  • Coordinate and monitor special education compliance including assessment/ARD timelines, federal child count funding, statewide assessments, provision of related services, and least restrictive environment.
