The International Advisor II serves as a designated school official (DSO). The role advises international students and processes a variety of documents to ensure compliance with federal immigration regulations. It also supports students with personal and cultural adjustment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Process immigration documents and student requests for F1 students in a timely and accurate manner while maintaining data integrity and solid record keeping.
- Advising international students on immigration and academic issues.
- Advising international students on matters of personal and cultural adjustment.
- Provide advisory services in person, by phone, or via email.
- Handle complex case work, including but not limited to reinstatements, employment-based applications, internships, and other advanced requests.
- Collaborate with specialized populations or cohorts as needed.
- Maintain communication with various departments, including Health Center, New Maverick Orientation, Academic Departments, and relevant government agencies (USCIS, SEVP, SSN office, DMV office, ICE).
- Present information regarding immigration regulations, employment regulations, campus resources, cultural adjustment, and campus technology to large groups of students.
- Work alongside Graduate Office and ELI office regarding students enrolled in GESP (Graduate English Skills Program), updating exceptions pages in People Soft to reflect enrolled hours.
- Assist with training of junior International Education Advisors.
- Assist with campus community outreach regarding F-1 status requirements.
- One (1) year of experience in immigration advising, preferably in an academic setting and working with F-1 students.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to serve as a designated school official.
- Three (3) years of DSO experience, experience working or living abroad, and/or additional related experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of F1 visa regulations, requirements, and restrictions.
- Ability to process and properly file immigration forms.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision.
- Working knowledge of computer programs, including SEVIS RTI, People Soft, Microsoft Office, Sunapsis, and Image Now.
- Ability to advise and process immigration casework.
- Customer service oriented with the ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to students’ needs.
