Chief Academic Officer
ROLE AND
PURPOSE:
The Chief Academic Officer is a strategic leader responsible for driving academic excellence across the district. This position oversees curriculum and instruction, assessment, professional learning, and all educational services. The CAO possesses a deep understanding of instructional practices and a passion for student learning and growth. The individual in this position will collaborate closely with district and school-level leaders to create a positive and supportive work environment that empowers educators to implement innovative strategies and improve student outcomes while also ensuring a guaranteed and viable curriculum.
By focusing on data-driven decision-making and a personalized learning approach, the Chief Academic Officer ensures that all students have the opportunity to thrive in Arlington ISD.
Education/Certification:
- Master's Degree from an accredited institution
- Administrator's Certificate issued by the Texas Education Agency
- Doctorate Degree preferred
- Five years of progressive, responsible, successful experience at campus and/or central administration level required; preferably experience at multiple levels - elementary school, junior high/middle school and high school.
- This position requires strong instructional expertise that keeps up to date on instructional administration techniques, educational research, programs, and state- and national-level analyses. In so doing, this leader evaluates promising findings to consider incorporating into the local organization.
- This position requires thorough knowledge of the Texas Education Code, a thorough understanding of curriculum and instruction, and a keen, working knowledge of other student-related services.
- Advanced skill levels are essential in oral and written communication, interpersonal and public relations, collaboration enhancement, facilitation in group decision making, general management, and organizational effectiveness.
- This position requires broad knowledge of work serving all student groups while promoting continuous improvement in all departments in the division.
- The ability to delegate responsibilities effectively is critically important.
- This position requires knowledge of the Science of Teaching Reading, conceptual and problem-solving frameworks in mathematics, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), accreditation, state and federal accountability frameworks, and grants obtainability.
- Other essential abilities for this position include the use of computer technology in administrative and education settings, problem-solving, capturing salient points from a mass of information, and motivating staff.
- Ability to design and present information to the Board of Trustees and other stakeholder audiences.
- Provides leadership to all personnel in Academic Services to ensure that all departments are coordinating efforts to provide efficient and effective delivery of educational services.
- Partners effectively with the Office of School Leadership to ensure academic services are aligned with the needs of district improvement efforts.
- Understands the Board policies and priorities; communicates guidelines pertinent to curriculum and instruction.
- Collaborates with others in the development, implementation, and monitoring of district and campus short and long-range instructional goals to improve instructional outcomes as measured by the state and national standards.
- Ensures that the written and assessed curriculum is aligned with state standards and district expectations.
- Collaborates effectively with the Chief Schools Officer to ensure the taught curriculum is aligned with board policy and district expectations.
- Coordinates with the Office of Research and Accountability to research best practices, create tools to evaluate progress on district priorities, and ensure that effective programs and best practices are utilized in the curriculum.
