About the Role As a Middle School Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher at Merryhill School, you will inspire students to become confident readers, thoughtful writers, effective communicators, and critical thinkers. You will create an engaging classroom environment where students strengthen their literacy skills, deepen their understanding of literature, and develop the ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively.
In this role, you will design and deliver meaningful instruction in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, and listening. Through novels, short stories, nonfiction texts, writing assignments, discussions, and projects, you will help students analyze complex ideas, build academic confidence, and develop the communication skills needed for future success.
You will also:

Develop and deliver engaging Language Arts lessons aligned with age-appropriate curriculum standards
Teach reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing mechanics, grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills
Support students in developing strong writing across multiple formats, including narrative, informative, argumentative, and analytical writing
Guide students in analyzing fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and other texts with attention to theme, structure, author’s craft, and evidence-based interpretation
Create opportunities for discussion, collaboration, presentation, and purposeful student expression
Differentiate instruction to meet varying learning needs, reading levels, and writing abilities
Assess student progress, provide constructive feedback, and adjust instruction to support continued growth
Foster a classroom culture that encourages curiosity, respectful dialogue, perseverance, and a love of reading and writing
Maintain classroom organization, student records, instructional materials, and a positive learning environment
Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues about progress, expectations, and student needs
Collaborate with school leadership and fellow teachers to support a cohesive and enriching student experience

What We’re Looking For

Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, Language Arts, or a related field from an accredited institution
Teaching credential or certification preferred
Prior teaching experience, particularly in middle school Language Arts or English, is a plus
Strong knowledge of reading instruction, writing development, grammar, vocabulary, and literary analysis
Ability to create engaging, age-appropriate lessons that support critical thinking and student confidence
Ability to differentiate instruction and support students with varying academic needs and skill levels
Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills
Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and academically engaging classroom environment
Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and school leadership
Ability to pass state and federal background checks
Passion for helping students develop strong literacy skills, intellectual curiosity, and a lasting appreciation for language and literature
