Position Title: Accessibility Specialist
Department: Students with Disabilities
Location: Arlington
Position Status: Full‑time
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; occasional evening and weekend work; attendance at conferences, meetings, and trainings on and off campus.
SalarySalary is commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience, paid on a monthly basis.
Job SummaryThe Accessibility Specialist provides assessment, eligibility determination, and provision for academic accommodations, and other support services as needed for students with disabilities at the University of Texas activities promote equal access for students and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in academic programs at the university. The specialist maintains a caseload of students with a variety of disabilities registered with the Student Access & Resource Center (SAR Center) and collaborates with campus partners to facilitate equal access and provide resources to faculty and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Analyze information from appointments, educational/medical records, psychological assessments, and diagnostic evaluations to understand student’s abilities, needs and eligibility for disability services.
- Participate in SAR Center Documentation Review Committee to assess student’s eligibility for services.
- Maintain caseload of students registered with SAR Center; meet with students to facilitate equal access to classes and programs; discuss options and goals to develop educational accommodations; maintain contact with students during academic semester to resolve disability issues and evaluate accommodation adequacy; monitor and record student’s progress in AIM system to ensure students’ educational accommodations are met.
- Maintain an interactive process with instructors, staff and others to develop/implement students’ accommodation plan, act as liaison between students, faculty and staff.
- Provide information and referral to university departments and external contacts requesting accommodation information and services.
- Attend and participate in conferences, meetings, training/workshops on and off campus; participate in SAR Center outreach activities and activities/committees within the Division of Student Affairs.
- Perform other duties assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field of vocational rehabilitation, counseling, psychology, social work, or special education.
- Three (3) years experience working in a disability related academic or clinical setting.
- Master’s degree in related field of vocational rehabilitation, counseling, psychology, social work, or special education.
- Three (3) years case management experience working with students with disabilities in a disability office on a higher education campus.
- Experience and/or knowledge working with individuals who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Knowledge of The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 2008) and how it applies to the higher education arena, the Rehabilitation Act (504) and applicable differences between K‑12 and Higher Education services; proficiency in various modes of counseling, interpretation of psycho‑educational evaluations, and ability to assess and identify academic accommodation needs.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
