Pay Grade: $24.00-$39.00/hour 187 days
Terms of Employment:
This FLSA non-exempt position (hourly) is on a work calendar of 187 days per school year. Pay is based on years of experience from the annually reviewed hourly salary schedule. This position is grant-funded, and continued employment is contingent upon the availability and continuation of grant funding.
Primary
Purpose:
To provide for the physical and instructional needs of students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing in a Special Education and General Education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including communication, self-help, behavior management, and instructional program. Work under supervision of a certified teacher.
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Texas educational aide certificate
- Certificate held from the Texas Board for Evaluation and Interpreters (BEI) or the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is required
Experience:
- Minimum of 1-2 years interpreting in an educational setting preferred
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
- Ability to work well with children
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of the Deaf Community and fluency in American Sign Language and thorough knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary
Major
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Instructional Support:
- Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
- Assist with the instructional program under the direct supervision of a certified teacher by adapting to each student's physical, communicative, medical, and emotional needs.
- Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
- Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
- Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
- Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
- Student Management:
- Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups.
- Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, hallway, and playground duty.
- Keep the teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
- Facilitate peer-to-peer communication during recess, lunch, group work, and extracurricular activities to foster social development.
- Other:
- Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
- Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.

- Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling; regular heavy lifting of students. Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases. Environment:
