Position: St. Barnabas UMC: Full-Time Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries

JOB DESCRIPTION
:
Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministries

RESPONSIBLE TO
:
Associate Pastor of Discipleship

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
:
To develop, plan, coordinate, evaluate, supervise and give general oversight to the areas of ministry to youth (grades 7 – 12) in cooperation with the goals and mission of St. Barnabas United Methodist Church.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. Create a ministry team with youth and parents of youth

  • Develop youth ministries utilizing the gifts of youth, parents of youth, and laity.

B. Help youth and leaders develop an ownership of Youth Ministry programs.

II. Communicate with and involve the parents of youth in ministry with our youth.

III. Develop a vision of youth ministry for St. Barnabas UMC.

  • Insure that the rationale you use for ministry is theologically sound and based on accepted United Methodist doctrine
  • Insure that youth ministry is designed to promote the spiritual, mental and physical development of young persons

IV. Develop a Youth Ministry that addresses the needs (including spiritual, social, physical, emotional etc.) of the youth and their well being.

A. Use a variety of activities (retreats, recreational opportunities, mission experiences, spiritual growth opportunities, and others) to meet those needs.

B. Contact all Youth who visit and/or are members of St. Barnabas UMC and seek to incorporate these youth into the life of St. Barnabas UMC and its youth ministry.

V. Serve as a pastor to the youth and build relationships.

A. Act as pastoral advisor for youth and parents

B. Act as advocate for youth to the congregation

C. Visit youth in homes, hospitals, schools, eating establishments and sporting events

D. Correspond with youth on occasions of illness, special achievements, birthdays, etc.

E. Plan and/or assist youth and adult sponsors in devotional and worship activities

VI. Administrative Responsibilities

A. Help youth and workers with youth discern their gifts and provide opportunities to test and sharpen the gifts.

B. Maintain a calendar of youth ministries functions, which is coordinated with the

master church calendar and is communicated in a timely manner to the

constituents of the youth program.

C. Coordinate the selection and ordering of all youth curriculum

E. Request building and vehicle use for all youth activities

F. Oversee organization of snack suppers

G. Purchase additional resources as needed

I. Encourage maintenance of orderly and attractive rooms, initiating arrangements for preparation and clean—up before and after events

J. Make suggestions for room improvements

VII. Responsibilities for programs

A. Guide in designing programs for Sunday Night, Sunday School, special youth events, and midweek studies

a. Guide in selection of curriculum and resource materials

b. Enable youth sponsors to lead programs and studies

c. Acquire guest speakers, music/AV resources, and other special programming needs

d. Lead programs and studies when needed

B. Recruit adult sponsors for Sunday Night and special events

C. Guide in planning all special events

VIII. Responsibilities for educational programs (grades 7 – 12)

A. Recruit Sunday school teachers and substitutes for all youth classes that are ministry safe approved

B. Assist teachers by providing resources and classroom management

  • Weekly Bible study, quarterly meet-ups and check-ins

X. Responsibilities for activities beyond the local church

A. Publicize and participate in district, conference and national events

XI. Responsibilities in Worship
  • Participate in morning worship and in special worship events (Advent,

Christmas, Easter, etc.) and make suggestions to incorporate youth into worship.

XII.
General Church Administration

B. Primary program and committee responsibilities:
Youth Council (S.A.L.T)

C. Provide information for the digital church newsletter

D. Attend bi-monthly staff meeting.

E. Follow guidelines of the Finance Team regarding budget requests, expenditures and seek approval for all fund raisers, special offerings, etc.
