Electrical Controls Design Engineer
Job Description A senior-level Electrical Engineer specializing in automation and power systems is needed to lead the design and execution of electrical panels, power distribution, and control schematics for complex projects. This role is critical within a confidential engineering organization focusing on custom automated systems. As the technical authority for electrical design, you will ensure solutions meet performance, safety, cost, and quality objectives.
This position is primarily onsite and hands‑on, requiring close collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, and integration teams.
- Lead the design and development of electrical panels and power/control schematics from concept through implementation, maintaining electrical drawings using AutoCAD or equivalent ECAD tools.
- Ensure electrical designs align with project specifications, performance requirements, and safety standards.
- Serve as the electrical design authority for assigned programs.
- Collaborate closely with controls engineering to ensure electrical designs integrate seamlessly with automation systems.
- Support system architecture decisions related to power distribution, control hardware, and electrical interfaces.
- Ensure electrical designs and panels comply with applicable national and international codes and standards (e.g., NEC, NFPA, ANSI, ISO).
- Support testing and commissioning activities to verify proper system operation and safety compliance.
- Act as the subject matter expert for troubleshooting electrical components within control systems and power panels.
- Mentor and support junior engineers, promoting best practices in electrical design and panel layout.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across electrical engineering processes.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with 7+ years of experience delivering electrical designs from concept to implementation or equivalent practical experience with a longer tenure.
- Demonstrated experience owning electrical panel and schematic designs for complex systems.
- Proficiency with ECAD tools and structured documentation environments.
- Strong understanding of electrical codes, safety standards, and best practices.
- Ability to manage scope, schedule, and resources while balancing technical and budget constraints.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
- High attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working on custom machinery, automation equipment, or integrated systems.
- Familiarity with structured engineering change management processes.
- Exposure to quality management systems and process improvement initiatives.
- Experience supporting equipment build, installation, or commissioning activities.
- Ability to create and maintain clear technical documentation, including procedures and O & M materials.
Join a small custom automation company with ambitious goals, supporting custom automated equipment for large aerospace and defense companies. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $60.00 – $85.00/hr eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
