Position: Project Engineer (Resident Inspector Development Program)

Duties
  • Participate in formal classroom training and other developmental activities to gain full certification as an NRC Inspector.
  • Assess licensee performance at nuclear facilities; perform direct inspections of licensee activities during operation phases.
  • Plan, prepare, and perform in-depth inspections at assigned plant(s) during start-up, operation, and decommissioning to ensure compliance with design specifications and conditions of the operating license.
  • Ensure inspection program completion in accordance with schedules specified in the Inspection Manual or other official documents.
  • Prepare and present inspection reports describing findings and conclusions regarding the licensee’s safety performance and conformance with NRC requirements, provisions of operating licenses, and applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Assist the Branch Chief or Senior Project Engineer in handling allegations and tracking their status.
Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is defined as experience that demonstrates thorough knowledge of principles, theories, and practices in the field of engineering, including recent experience in a variety of professional engineering disciplines (e.g., nuclear, electrical, mechanical, metallurgical, structural, chemical). Recent experience in the industry of commercial, government, or military nuclear power is preferred. Familiarity with nuclear industry standards, rules, and regulations and ability to apply them is required.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge of design features and operating characteristics of nuclear facilities and professional experience with reactor facilities.
  • Ability to evaluate activities and events, develop inspection findings, and evaluate adequacy of corrective actions.
  • Ability to develop and implement successful approaches to problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
Education

Must meet basic professional knowledge requirements for Federal engineering positions, including: a bachelor’s or higher degree in a relevant engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program, or a current P.E. registration, or completion of an EIT examination, or equivalent coursework and professional experience. Engineering‑technology degrees not generally qualifying unless supplemented by other evidence.

Positions are located in the Division of Operating Reactor Safety:

  • Region I – King of Prussia, PA
  • Region II – Atlanta, GA
  • Region III – Naperville, IL
  • Region IV – Arlington, TX

Geographic mobility is a condition of employment, and selectees must sign a Mobility Agreement upon offer.

Note:

Tour length for a resident inspector at a single site is limited to ten (10) years by commission policy.

Trial period for new employees is two years; preference eligible veterans serve a one‑year trial period.
