Salary:
Salary is commensurate based on qualifications and relevant experience up to $48,000. Pay Basis:
Monthly
- Support the University’s Hazardous Waste Program.
- Collect, transport, and process biological and hazardous waste for disposal.
- Perform proper inspection of waste prior to pick-up and ensure compliance with waste regulations.
- Support day-to-day management, operational and compliance activities at the waste facility.
- Participate in bulking of hazardous waste and other disposal activities.
- Perform functions to support the Universal Waste program.
- Maintain appropriate, accurate, and complete documentation and/or records to ensure compliance with institutional policies, federal, state, and local regulations.
- Perform inspections of laboratories and maintenance shops where hazardous and universal waste is generated.
- Assist with the Hazard Communication Program.
- Provide recommendations to faculty, staff, and students regarding hazardous waste requirements, chemical and laboratory safety.
- Assist with accident investigation. Perform air quality testing and investigation and prepare reports, communicate results of investigations with building occupants.
- Assist with preparing and submitting applicable reports and documents to regulatory agencies, such as STEERS Report, Tier II Report, Waste Minimization Plan, and air permitting operational status. May communicate with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies regarding above reports.
- Perform inspections and testing of laboratory safety equipment (Fume hood, Eye Wash, Safety Shower) as assigned.
- Assist the EH&S Assistant Director with the management of the University’s Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) program.
- Participate in the inspection of equipment under SPCC. Assist with the University’s Wastewater Discharge Permit with the City of Arlington.
- Support implementation of the stormwater management program.
- Develop, conduct, or assist with Environmental Health & Safety training programs as directed.
- Perform miscellaneous duties and assist other personnel in Environmental Health and Safety as assigned.
- Maintain 40-Hr HAZWOPER certification to include wearing a respirator.
- Manage clean-up procedures and disposal of material associated with hazardous material spills.
- Participate in after-hours emergency response.
- Associate’s degree in chemistry, engineering, biology, safety, environmental science, or related scientific field.
- Two (2) years of experience with hazardous waste, biosafety, environmental protection/compliance, or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience in similar roles.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Natural Sciences, or a related field.
- Two (2) years of administrative experience implementing hazardous waste and universal waste programs, conducting inspections, and performing accident and indoor air quality investigations.
- Prior experience delivering safety training and conducting safety inspections.

- Project management skills with the ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple tasks, with good follow-through.
- Ability to work independently or with small groups without direct supervision.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to take directions.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge of applicable environmental protection laws, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures.
- Ability to understand the function and use of equipment to inspect, test, monitor, or measure safe environmental levels.
- Knowledge and use of personal computers.
- Potential exposure to hazardous conditions and/or materials.
- Must be capable of performing duties while wearing respiratory protection and other personnel protective equipment.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
