The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Dallas-Fort Worth region, which is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States.

The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is seeking a Transportation Planner in the Land Use and Mobility Options program to support projects related to the interface between land use and transportation, bicycle and pedestrian planning, community school siting, and Safe Routes to School. This position is a unique opportunity to experience diverse, real-world applications of integrated transportation and land use planning and funding.

The individual in the position will assist with activities related to infrastructure and land use planning and project funding, multimodal/land use planning studies, bicycle and pedestrian safety, context-sensitive design, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and analysis.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting with the development of guidance documents and recommendations related to a wide range of transportation/land use planning topics
  • Assisting with the evaluation of infrastructure projects submitted for funding
  • Assisting with the development of multimodal roadway corridor, downtown, and Safe Routes to School plan
  • Assisting with projects that advance unique environmental and transportation solutions
  • Assisting with the coordination and review of planning and infrastructure projects, including data collection and analysis related to land use, demographics, market conditions, and multimodal transportation access
  • Coordinating with city governments, transit agencies, developers, nonprofits, consultants, stakeholders, and the public on transportation projects related to multimodal roadway corridors, downtowns, and Safe Routes to Schools
  • Drafting correspondence, grant applications, technical reports, and other documents
  • Preparing and delivering oral presentations

    Assisting with the development of maps, graphics, and spatial analysis utilizing ArcGIS and visualization tools

Required Skills

  • Good communication, both verbal and written, and interpersonal skills
  • Good critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Familiarity with gathering and analyzing data from multiple sources such as Census data, appraisal district parcel data, land-use, and zon i n g data, etc.
  • Working knowledge of planning and urban design principles, development processes, and context-sensitive planning methods
  • Familiarity with interrelationships between transportation and land-use planning and the ability to work on multiple projects while balancing priorities
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro and the ability to develop layers, shape files, and maps

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in analytical, quantitative methods (urban/transportation planning, economic development, public administration, etc.)
  • At least one year of work-related experience

Salary

Minimum of $55,601.96 - $66,722.35 annually

The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.
