About This RoleNorth Star Energy Services is seeking a Mechanical Engineer / Project Engineer to join our collaborative multidisciplinary team. This dual‑role position combines hands‑on mechanical and piping engineering with broader project leadership, providing the opportunity to support projects from concept and detailed design through construction, commissioning, and startup.
What You'll DoIn this role, you will develop mechanical and piping design deliverables for energy facilities, including design concepts, engineering criteria, equipment specifications and selections, and code interpretations. As Project Engineer, you will also help define scope, schedule, and budget; coordinate procurement and vendor activities; and serve as a key technical connection among clients, internal disciplines, and third‑party partners throughout the project lifecycle, including construction and field implementation.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
- Develop practical mechanical and piping design solutions for pipeline and facility projects, including traps, regulator stations, measurement stations, compressor stations, pump stations, tank terminals, and main‑line block valve sites
- Perform engineering analyses, calculations, and design activities for a broad range of mechanical deliverables, including:
- Line Sizing Calculations
- Pipe Support Load Analysis and Nozzle Load Evaluations
- Piping Stress and Strain Analysis per applicable codes and standards
- Equipment and Piping Layouts for Compressor Stations, Pump Stations, Tank Terminals, and Truck Loading Facilities
- Hot Taps, Stopples, and Related Mechanical Work
- Interpret and apply applicable codes and standards for gathering, transmission, distribution, petrochemical, and related energy systems
- Develop and review specifications, data sheets, and equipment selections for rotating and fixed equipment, including:
- Pressure Vessels, Drums, Tanks, Filters, Mixers, Strainers, and Separators
- Pumps, Compressors, and Turbines
- Apply knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methods, including machining, grinding, welding, assembly, and inspection, together with materials engineering, metallurgy, and material selection
- Provide independent technical review of project PPFDs, PFDs, and P&IDs for constructability, operability, and multidisciplinary coordination
- Develop and maintain standardized engineering procedures, calculation methods, and design practices that support consistent technical quality
- Ensure project compliance with applicable codes and standards, including:
- Title 49 CFR Parts 190-199, 40 CFR 112, 40 CFR 264
- ASME BPVC‑VIII Pressure Vessel
- API 620, API 650, API 12C Tank Design
- Piping Design Systems, ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8
- API 610 Pumps, Centrifugal Pumps (1 hp to 10,000 hp)
- API 674/675/676, Positive Displacement Pumps
- API 682, Shaft Sealing Systems for Centrifugal and Rotary Pumps
- Mechanical Seal Design Systems
- API 520/521 Pressure Relief Devices
- PROJECT ENGINEERING & DELIVERABLE MANAGEMENT
- Serve as Project Engineer for assigned projects, with responsibility for scope, schedule, budget, and coordinated technical execution across engineering disciplines
