Interns – GIS and Data Solutions (Summer)

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Dallas-Fort Worth region, which is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States.
The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is seeking summer Interns to provide support to the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Data Solutions team. The student in this position will assist with a variety of mapping, spatial analysis, data manipulation, and georeferencing tasks across the department. Ideal candidates should live within the Dallas-Fort Worth Region and be able to work at least 20 - 25 hours a week from approximately mid-May to mid-August 2026. Continuing employment opportunities may be available for Interns who are successful in this position and live in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assisting with mapping and data support for various projects in the Transportation Department
- Working with supervisor to edit, maintain, and perform quality control on GIS datasets
- Working with supervisor to geo-reference historical aerial imagery
- Working with supervisor to manipulate and interpret large datasets
- Working with supervisor to create and maintain web mapping products in ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, and other platforms
- Drafting for supervisor review, responses to technical assistance and data requests
- Participating in meetings and discussions as needed
Required Skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
- Basic knowledge of GIS principles and the ESRI ArcGIS platform, including map production, manipulation of GIS datasets, spatial analysis, and/or interactive online mapping applications
- Familiarity with the basic principles of common programming/scripting languages used in data analysis, including Python, Pandas, SQL, and/or others preferred
- Demonstrated ability to analyze data using a variety of tools both inside and outside of the ArcGIS platform preferred
- Familiarity with basic principles of cartography
- Good analytical skills, including the ability to recognize patterns and discrepancies
- Good communication, both verbal and written, and interpersonal skills, with ability to listen to instructions, coordinate with other team members, and present ideas
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Detail oriented, highly organized, with an ability to handle multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline driven environment without diminishing quality of work
Required Education and Experience
- Must be attending an accredited college or university in a degree‑seeking program during employment
- No work experience required
- At least one year of school‑related experience
Minimum of $17.10 per hour
