Overview

Pet Supermarket is one of the largest retail operations dedicated to providing Pet Parents with the best selection of pet care items and passionate customer service. Assistant Store Managers (ASMs) lead the front line in delivering friendly customer service and driving sales, KPIs, and customer experience initiatives. The role requires an outgoing, upbeat, people‑person who is sales‑driven and possesses strong organizational skills.

ASMs thrive in a high‑energy environment and collaborate with Shift Managers, Shift Leads, and Sales Associates to provide World Class Service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Drive sales, service, and customer experience initiatives to achieve sales, KPIs, and other store performance goals.
  • Monitor customer service and selling models, ensuring all staff interact with customers professionally and resolve all complaints.
  • Direct work as needed, celebrating and recognizing team efforts and accomplishments.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and a positive attitude in the workplace, communicating appropriately in person, verbally, in writing, or via email.
  • Protect employees and customers by maintaining a safe, clean store environment and ensuring the well‑being of all livestock, including animal care and feeding.
  • Accountable for the protection of all company assets, tangible and intangible.
  • Motivate, coach, develop, and performance‑manage teams focused on the expected customer experience and selling model.
  • Review store communications, distribute information to employees, and ensure actions are completed.
  • Uphold company values and ensure they are accurately represented within the store.
  • Maintain brand standards and operational excellence.
  • Assist with maintainance of the fish system, inventory, ordering, and budgeting.
  • Partner with Store Manager to conduct accurate physical inventories and meet shrink goals.
  • Create a team‑oriented environment through customer service role‑plays and in‑store contests.
  • Support labour hour management, training, new hire checklists, sales techniques, and new product launches.
  • Assist with task assignments and development of store associates for future success.
  • Partner with Store Manager on performance management, course‑correcting, and timely action.
  • Assist with hiring needs, develop a talent pipeline, conduct pre‑screening, interviewing, and reference checks.
  • Plan and execute community events and develop business relationships with rescue agencies.
Experience, Education & Certifications
  • Minimum of 2 years in a retail management role.
  • Enjoy working with and around animals.
  • College degree is an asset.
Job Requirements
  • Work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and/ or holidays.
  • Work a rotating schedule: 2 closing shifts per week; 1 full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) every period; 1 full weekend off every period if coverage permits.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle.
Physical Demands

Heavy lifting up to 55 lbs several times per shift. Majority of tasks do not require long periods of mental concentration, aside from inventory ordering. Work occurs on the selling floor, standing, and moving around. Requires active listening and observation. Store environment is temperature‑stable. Possible accidental injuries from pets and common slips, trips, falls, and strains/sprains due to lifting.
