Job Summary:

The Senior Electrician provides advanced journeyman-level installation, maintenance, and service of electrical systems. Responsible for the prompt performance of assigned electrical and related duties, including assisting the Supervisor in supervising semi‑skilled and skilled staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain the automated work order system, issuing work orders to the electrical personnel and ensuring completion.
  • Communicate with faculty and staff to assess user needs and schedule work times.
  • Order materials needed to complete work orders.
  • Install and repair underground electrical conduit and wire for pole lighting and services, including trenching, locating new equipment, and replacing damaged components.
  • Install new electrical services to buildings and extend old services, including removal of old feeders and pulling new feeders per NEC.
  • Remove old switch gear and install new; replace breakers in switch gear and panels.
  • Estimate costs for electrical work needed for research or other needs, applying knowledge of electrical materials, building practices, and national electrical code.
  • Install, maintain, and repair transformers, generators, control panels, switches, circuit breakers, outlets, fixtures, fittings, and accessories, including lighting layout and generator/ATS testing.
  • Demolish existing electrical and install new electrical for renovation projects across campus, reading blueprints, tracking cost, writing change orders, coordinating with architects and engineers.
  • Assist the electrical supervisor in day‑to‑day operations, supervising all personnel and campus operations, including training and mentorship.
  • Act as supervisor in the supervisor’s absence.
  • Respond to on‑call electrical emergencies before, during, and after normal hours.
  • Diagnose campus electrical distribution issues, plan actions, communicate severity, and resolve problems.
  • Install new electrical for research equipment and assist other departments with troubleshooting and new equipment installation.
  • Assist in installing electricals for special events such as concerts, student move‑in, graduation ceremonies, sporting events, etc.
  • Maintain yearly training certifications, including electrical continuing education, hazardous communication, security training, driver education, first aid, asbestos, lift training, NFPA 70, and forklift training.
  • Operate UTA vehicles as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and electrical journeyman’s license.
  • Seven (7) years of experience as a licensed electrical journeyman.
  • Texas Class “C” operator’s driver’s license with at least three (3) years of acceptable driving history.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with NFPAA 70, 101, and 1.
  • Master Electrician’s license.
  • Two (2)+ years of lead or supervisory experience.
  • Experience on large university campuses.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of all types of electrical equipment and hand power tools common to the trade.
  • Accurate in all phases of work performed.
  • Ability to operate one‑man lifts, boom lifts, bucket trucks, and scissor lifts.
  • Knowledge of medium‑voltage (15 kV) terminations and testing.
Other Requirements
  • Alertness and careful attention required to avoid injury to self and others.
  • This role is essential; may need to report to work when essential personnel are required on campus.
Workplace and Eligibility Conditions
  • Exposure to all weather elements and medium‑high electrical voltage.
  • Ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, and building rooftops.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, bend, stand, sit, kneel, and squat.
  • Exposure to adverse elements such as biohazards, toxic chemicals, dust, dirt, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and all‑weather conditions.
