Position
Carpenter – Facilities Management (Housing). Full‑time, Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm. (Rotation: 3 weeks per month; one week per month, shift subject to change.)
Job SummaryThe Carpenter provides journeyman‑level skills for carpentry, construction, maintenance and repair work across all University facilities, including residential buildings, classrooms, housing, sidewalks, parking lots and offices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform general carpentry, construction, cabinetry, building maintenance, modifications and demolition, including framing, wood and metal work, trim, drywall, concrete and rebar, doors, hinges, suspended ceilings, vertical and horizontal tile, cabinet construction, and repair.
- Construct and install tables, benches, cabinets, bookshelves, desks, countertops, lamination, wall/floor/ceiling mounts, kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures.
- Maintain and repair existing structures: doors, walls, windows, floors, fixtures, ceilings, furniture, chairs, laundry facilities, showers, tubs, bedrooms, dining, and kitchen areas.
- Track material usage and labor for work assignments.
- Inspect current and future work assignments.
- Assist in ordering and pick‑up of materials from vendors.
- Act as a shop representative to University Departments.
- Understand and follow work orders, drawings and both written and verbal instructions.
- Work independently and efficiently; perform duties assigned by the Shop Supervisor or Manager.
- Respond to on‑call emergencies (fires, electrical outages, floods, icy conditions, and other campus emergencies). Drive a UTA vehicle and participate in the on‑call program during evenings, weekends and after hours.
- Perform any other duties as needed and serve as essential personnel during campus emergencies and closures.
- High school graduation with a minimum of three (3) years of skilled/journeyman carpentry experience.
- Texas Class "C" operator’s driver’s license and a clean driving record for the past three (3) years.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions in English.
- Demonstrated accuracy in all phases of work performed.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficient in safe operation of shop, hand and power tools (tablesaw, jointer, planer, shaper, router, band saw, circular saw, jig saw, miter saw, radial arm saw, chop saw, drill press, electric, battery‑operated hand drills, screw guns, pneumatic hammers, power‑actuated fastening systems).
- Physical ability to perform all required tasks.
- Ability to operate a boom lift and other types of lifts.
- Alertness and careful attention required to avoid injury.
- Assist other shops as needed.
